Austrian side RB Salzburg take on Dutch side Feyenoord on Friday in a friendly match with both sides continuing to keep their preparations going.
Steinbergstadion Leogang, Salzburg, Austria
Key Stat: RB Salzburg have been crowned Austrian Bundesliga winners six time in a row.
Expert Verdict: These two sides are very even on paper, and that means it's tough to separate them for this particular fixture. Salzburg are almost always good, at least here lately in Austria, and Feyenoord have come back down off a high from a couple of years ago. Because of that, you have to like the Austrians' chances to take down Feyenoord here.
Jesse Marsch will be evaluating his side here as he takes charge of his first team as the manager outside of the United States.
Erling Braut Haland remains a man to keep an eye on. He scored in their recent draw against Arsenal Tula, keeping up the ridiculously hot form he has shown earlier in the year in the FIFA U-20 World Cup. He scored nine times in that win over Honduras, keeping up what had already been a very successful career for Norway.
Salzburg have a draw, a loss, and three wins in their last five matches:
1-1 draw vs Arsenal Tula (Fri)
0-1 loss vs CSKA Sofia (Fri)
0-3 win vs Kirchanschoring (Fri)
7-0 home win vs St. Polten
1-2 win at Sturm Graz
Defenders:Ramalho, Farkas, Onguene, Ulmer
Midfielders:Junuzovic, Mwepu, Szoboszlai
Forwards:Haland, Hwang, Minamino
Jaap Stam will be looking to see which young players can blend in with his more experienced bunch ahead of the new season that promises to be full of games aplenty.
17 year old striker Marouan Azarkan will have given Feyenoord a ton of hope with his showing recently as he bagged a pair of second half goals in the win over Dordecht in a friendly. It’s early days, but in the Netherlands it’s always possible for a youngster to develop very quickly from nobody to a big name.
Feyenoord have in their last five matches:
2-1 win vs Darmstadt
1-2 win vs Dordecht
0-6 win vs SDC Putten
1-4 win at Fortuna Sittard
0-2 home loss vs ADO
Defenders:St. Juste, Botteghin, van Beek, Malacia
Midfielders:Kokcu, Wehrmann, Ayoub
Forwards:Summerville, Toure, Azarkan
RB Salzburg face off with Feyenoord for the very first time in this friendly match.
RB Salzburg come into this, the third match of their preseason, having started slowly. That shouldn’t be a huge worry, though, since they have looked so good in previous seasons. They won last year’s Austrian Bundesliga title by a rather large margin, and they thus are in the Champions League group stage. They will have three more matches before kicking off their season with a trip to Vienna to face Rapid.
Feyenoord comes into their fourth preseason encounter in this match. They have started fairly well, though it is early days. They won the Dutch Eredivisie title in 2016/17, but they suffered a downturn last season by finishing in a distant third behind Ajax and PSV Eindhoven. They did make it to the Europa League, though they still will have to fight through the third qualifying round and the play-off round in order to get to the group stages.
Salzburg have a lot of very good, underrated attacking players that just keep coming through the pipeline. One of them is bound to have a good day in front of goal and carry them to a victory.
