Partizan Belgrade and Manchester United first met in the European Cup in 1965-66 – United’s first season back in the competition after the Munich disaster, which had occurred when Matt Busby’s side had been travelling back from a match against Red Star Belgrade. Partizan won that semi-final tie in 1966 to reach the final, where they eventually lost to Real Madrid. This will be their first match in European competition since.
Drawing with Liverpool at the weekend might have extended Manchester United’s winless run, but the performance was a vast improvement on recent weeks.
And it is on that positive, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side must build as they travel to Serbia to take on Partizan Belgrade.
Mason Greenwood is fit again, to take his place in the likely much-changed United team, while it is another opportunity for players like Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes to prove their worth.
Returning first team players like Anthony Martial and Phil Jones could also feature, with the task now one of starting to build some momentum.

Again, however, the draw with Liverpool gives them something to build on – in defence and in attack – and Solskjaer has reached an important turning point in his managerial career.

Partizan Belgrade form has been inconsistent at best. They have lost their last two league games – 2-1 at home to Vozdovac despite Strahinja Pavlovic scoring a 90th-minute equaliser and most recently 1-0 at Mladost Lucani. In between, however, they won 6-0 at Vodojaza in the cup and Umar Sadiq scored twice in a 2-1 win at Astana in the Europa League earlier this month.
As there has been for both Europa League matches so far, there is likely to be more rotation for Manchester United. Mason Greenwood is fit again and could return, while Sergio Romero could be in goal – he was expected to start against Liverpool, only for David de Gea to pass a late fitness test. Of the players that have featured in this competition, Diogo Dalot, Nemanja Matic and Axel Tuanzebe are out injured.
