Hertha Berlin
VS
SC Freiburg

Our Prediction Tip

Draw will win this match.

They have had a more prestigious status for some time now, so it’s no surprise to learn that Hertha Berlin have enjoyed the best of their 20 meetings with Freiburg: they lead the head-to-head 8-4, with eight draws into the bargain.

The current crop of Freiburg players will be hoping to improve upon that record during this coming season.

Hertha Berlin vs SC Freiburg: Prediction

Hertha became renowned for the majority of last season for being a team that was simply very difficult to beat, and with a restful summer under their belts there is no reason why that pattern can’t return here. They like to take possession and move the ball around slowly and conservatively; which could frustrate this young Freiburg team.

This Freiburg outfit averaged more than two goals per game last season, and having kept two of their key players Grifo and Petersen on board there is absolutely no reason why they can’t spring a surprise or two this term. The task of breaking down a Hertha defence that conceded ten in five at the tail-end of the 2015/16 campaign will hold no fear.

Second guessing how a promoted team will get on early in the subsequent season is a tricky old task, and one we’re largely happy to avoid at the present. What Freiburg will find is a Hertha Berlin side content with playing a rather frustrating brand of football – not the comfort they were used to last term.

Expect a low-scoring contest that could go either way, then.

Hertha Berlin vs SC Freiburg Betting Tips

Hertha Berlin were easy to oppose last season because even when they were winning matches they were far from prolific; so opposing them with handicap wagers yielded plenty of results. Given Freiburg’s proclivity for scoring goals it’s easy to give them the edge in the handicap markets, so add them with a +0.5 start to your betslip.

But as far as the end result is concerned, it really is a tough one to call. These early season games have a habit of surprising, so perhaps backing the draw at 12/5 is the most risk-averse strategy.

What a disastrous end to the 2015/16 campaign it was for Hertha Berlin. They had occupied the top four places in the Bundesliga table for the best part of the season, and then a horrendous run of six games without a win meant they missed out on the European places altogether. Hey have had the summer to regroup though, and essentially the same squad will take to the Olympic Stadium here once again.

Hertha Berlin likely XI:

  • Goalkeeper:- Rune Jarstein

  • Defenders:- Mitchell Weiser, Marvin Plattenhardt, John-Anthony Brooks, Sebastian Langkamp

  • Midfielders:- Per Skjelbred, Vladimir Darida, Genki Haraguchi, Alexander Baumjohann

  • Forwards:- Salomon Kalou, Vedad Ibisevic

Champions….that’s got a nice ring to it. And that’s exactly how Freiburg find themselves taking on Hertha Berlin this week after they were crowned victors of Bundesliga 2. They will be hoping that feel-good factor carries them to further glory this term.

SC Freiburg likely XI:

  • Goalkeeper:- Alexander Schwolow

  • Defenders:- Christian Gunter, Marc Kempf, Torrejon, Mensur Mudza

  • Midfielders:- Amir Abrashi, Mike Frantz, Max Phillip, Nicolas Hofler, Vincenzo Grifo

  • Forwards:- Nils Petersen

Hertha\'s demise in the last six weeks of the season was a shame to see, particularly as they has been one of the Bundesliga\'s most efficient performers up until that point. How this squad can reform and regroup after such disappointment will dictate what they can achieve this time around. Freiburg will be full of beans after winning the title last year, and they will have nothing to fear from a trip to the Olympic Stadium. If they adopt their same cosmopolitan style of football then they could shock plenty in 2016/17. Knowing that the opening weekend of the season has that uncanny ability to surprise, let\'s sit on the fence and go for the draw here.
Freiburg scored 75 goals last season in their title-winning effort; that\'s more than two per game. Having kept the same team together through the summer, they must be fancied to avoid relegation with ease.
