Germany will win this match.
Since the break-up of Yugoslavia and then Montenegrin independence, Serbia and Germany have played each other twice. The Germans won a 2008 friendly 2-1 but Milan Jovanovic scored as Serbia won 1-0 when they met in the 2010 World Cup group stage.

Germany’s poor 2018 has not deterred the bookmakers from making them comfortable favourites to win this one. You can back the hosts at 7/17 to win with 10Bet.
Question marks still remain about their defence, however – and Serbia have the attacking players to make a difference too. A Germany win and BTTS is a best price of 21/10 with Bet365 and Betway.
Both teams to score has been set at 10/11 with Betway, meanwhile, and over 2.5 goals is priced at 4/6 with Bet365, Ladbrokes and 10Bet.
Timo Werner will lead the line for Germany and he is 21/20 to score at any time with Ladbrokes. Leroy Sane netted in both matches in November, meanwhile, and the Manchester City winger is a best price of 21/10 with Betway to score at any time.
Germany are unbeaten on home soil in their last five matches despite their otherwise poor form and that should give them confidence as they look for a positive start to 2019.
It is fair to say 2018 was a disaster for the Germans – knocked out in the World Cup group stage having been defending champions and joint favourites, before relegation from the top UEFA Nations League tier.
But there still remains plenty of cause for optimism in what is still a young squad – players like Leroy Sane, Thilo Kehrer, Niklas Sule, Timo Werner and Julian Brandt must now step up and lead them into this new era.
Serbia have some in-form options of their own, including Dusan Tadic – who has been central to Ajax’s success so far this season – and they are in good form.
But there is a difference between topping their group at the third tier of the UEFA Nations League and facing Germany away from home.
Sane’s pace and skill could make for a tricky evening for captain Aleksandar Kolarov, while the absence of Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng at the back mean the likes of Sule have a lot to prove too against Aleksandar Mitrovic.
Bigger tests lie ahead for Germany as they look to bounce back from their annus miserablis but a home win against Serbia would at least provide a platform to build from.
Joachim Low has already made some bold selection decisions ahead of this one. It feels like a new era for Germany and they need to kick it off with a win.
Joachim Low has already confirmed he will not be selecting Thomas Muller, Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng going forward, which gives an opportunity for new players to step up. Leroy Sane seems to have won Low over and scored in each of the last two matches, while Lukas Klosterman, Niklas Stark and Maximilian Eggestein could all make their German debuts. Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has been recalled, meanwhile, while Joshua Kimmich has been retained despite slamming the decision to write off his three experienced club team-mates.
Timo Werner – Scored in the draw with the Netherlands to end a long spell without an international goal – having previously made a great start to his Germany career.
Marco Reus – One of the key figures in Borussia Dortmund’s superb season so far with 14 goals and six assists in the Bundesliga.
Leroy Sane – Goals in each of the last two matches and another brilliant season at club level should mean his World Cup omission is now firmly in the past.
Germany drew both home games during the UEFA Nations League against France and the Netherlands but away defeats saw them finish bottom of their group. They are unbeaten in their last two matches, however, having played both matches in November in Germany. First they beat Russia 3-0 thanks to goals from Leroy Sane, Niklas Sule and Serge Gnabry, and then drew 2-2 with the Dutch after Timo Werner and Sane scored early goals – the Netherlands hitting back in the final five minutes.
Nikola Vasiljevic and Miroslav Bogosavac are the only uncapped players in the Serbian squad to face Germany and Portugal, with very little change from the squad which faced Lithuania in November. Filip Kostic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic are the most notable returnees. Marko Grujic’s refusal to accept an under-21 call-up after the World Cup sees him miss out.
Aleksandar Mitrovic – Goals have dried up in the Premier League for the Fulham striker, but for Serbia he has six in his last five internationals.
Dusan Tadic – Enjoying a superb season with Ajax and will hope that attacking form can be translated onto the international stage.
Aleksandar Kolarov – The captain’s experience remains crucial and the Roma wing-back also serves up dangerous set pieces at the other end.
Despite going to the World Cup in the summer, Serbia’s lowly ranking meant they had to play in the third tier of the UEFA Nations League before Christmas – but they made light work of their group, winning four and drawing two of their six matches. The two draws were against Romania, but two wins apiece against Montenegro and Lithuania secured top spot. Adem Ljajic and Aleksandar Mitrovic scored in a 2-1 defeat of the former in November, before both men netted again, along with an own goal and Aleksandar Prijovic’s strike, to seal top spot with a 4-1 defeat of Lithuania.
