Chelsea are at 10/3, a draw is at 3/1, and Bayern Munich are at 8/11.
Chelsea will come into this match with a little bit of momentum due to their win over Tottenham on Saturday. That win means they remain in fourth place in the Premier League, all the while getting one over on a direct rival. They have work to do there to shore up a spot in next season’s UCL, but they are well on their way now. In terms of Europe, though, this is going to be very tough, as Bayern are beyond what Ajax is now and certainly far better than Valencia.
Bayern will also come into this match with some momentum. A lot of it, in fact. Hansi Flick has turned their fortunes around and gotten the utmost out of players all the while. It’s been a long, long time since they have lost now, and they are on top of the German Bundesliga due to that run. They are in a tight race with Leipzig, but you would have to favor them to hold them off, if not pull away down the stretch. In Europe, they will start to look like genuine contenders again, or should at the very least.
Chelsea’s home record this season, especially in the Premier League, has not been anything to boast about. In all competitions, they have nine wins, four draws, and seven losses in 20 matches. They won just once in their three UCL games at the Bridge- with that coming over lowly Lille. As for Bayern, their away record includes 11 wins, two draws, and three losses in all comps. They have not lost since the start of December on the road, to Monchengladbach. They won all three of their away outings in the UCL, too, with the 2-7 win at Tottenham being the standout thus far.
Ladbrokes have both sides scoring at 8/15.
Betfair have Bayern scoring first at 1.57.
In previous seasons, this would be seen as a 50/50 tie, but Bayern have improved and Chelsea have gotten worse. It’s a matter of timing, and right now the time is right for Bayern to take control of the tie.
Frank Lampard has injuries that will keep N’Golo Kante, Christian Pulisic, Marco van Ginkel, and former (reported) Bayern target Callum Hudson-Odoi out of the squad for this fixture.
Lampard has some interesting and tough decisions to make with team selection here. Tammy Abraham came off the bench on Saturday and looked good, even without scoring, so he could be set to get the nod. He’s done well in England but has struggled of late and will face a big step up here. In the middle of the park, Jorginho will be a central figure here. Oft criticized, his role with and without the ball will be crucial as they face a Bayern side that can beat you a number of ways.
Chelsea have two wins, a loss, and two draws in their last five matches:
2-1 home win vs Tottenham
0-2 home loss vs Manchester United
2-2 draw at Leicester
1-2 win at Hull (FA Cup)
2-2 home draw vs Arsenal
Hansi Flick will be missing three players due to injuries, with Nicklas Sule, Leon Goretzka, and Ivan Perisic set to miss out. Jerome Boateng and Benjamin Pavard, who were both suspended on Friday in the Bundesliga, will be ready to return.
The first thing you have to do to unseat Bayern is to stop the irrepressible Robert Lewandowski. That’s easier said than done, though. The Pole rescued them from an embarrassing draw on Friday, scoring a brace against bottom club Paderborn. That gave him 25 goals in the Bundesliga so far, on top of the ten he has in the UCL. Speaking of which, Serge Gnabry also played a large role in the outcome of that match. He scored the opener and provided both assists to Lewandowski. He also has four goals in this comp, all coming in the aforementioned demolition of Spurs.
Bayern have four wins and a draw in their last five matches:
3-2 home win vs Paderborn
1-4 win at Cologne
0-0 home draw vs RB Leipzig
4-3 home win vs Hoffenheim (DFB Pokal)
1-3 win at Mainz
