Wales Predicted Line Up - EURO 2016 Semi Final

What will be the starting XI for Wales Semi-final against Portugal

his Wales side has far exceeded all expectations in Euro 2016, and that has been partly due to the tactics they have deployed. Against a rather lacklustre Portugal outfit, they stand a great chance of reaching their first major tournament final.

Chris Coleman has opted for the 5-3-2 formation beloved by Italy, amongst others, and it has worked for his squad; as their 3-1 win over Belgium in the last round testifies.

Two key players will be missing the game through suspension – Aaron Ramsey and Ben Davies – so here is the starting eleven that Coleman will probably opt for:

Goalkeeper: Wayne Hennessey

Hennessey has been an integral part of this Welsh defensive rearguard and with just three goals conceded in the games that the Crystal Palace man has started in he seems to be a certain pick for this match against Portugal.

Defence: James Chester, Ashley Williams, James Collins, Neil Taylor, Chris Gunter

Wales’ progress has been built upon a solid foundation in defence, and the central pairing of Chester and captain Williams have been ever present. They will be joined in tackling Ronaldo and co by James Collins, who will replace the suspended Davies.

On the flanks Gunter and Taylor will be expected to marshal Nani and Adrien Silva, while providing support in attack when Wales are on the front foot.

Midfield: Joe Allen, Joe Ledley, Andy King

The two Joes, Allen and Ledley, have been outstanding in this tournament to date; acting as a shield to their defence but also providing the springboard for their occasional forays forward.

They will need a new partner though due to Ramsey’s absence, and the most likely candidate is Andy King, an energetic presence who comes here on the back of a Premier League title winning season with Leicester City.

Attack: Gareth Bale, Hal Robson-Kanu

Everyone knows exactly what Gareth Bale is capable of, and he has been the talisman for Wales in this tournament. His three goals have been essential to his team’s cause.

But Hal Robson-Kanu has taken many people aback with his mature displays; this was a player released by Reading at the end of last season. His turn and finish against Belgium for the crucial second goal was outstanding, so plenty more is expected.
