After scoring for fun in pre-season, Manchester City were sluggish against Brighton and can not afford a repeat against an Everton defence that has impressed this year.
Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus’ burgeoning partnership up front has yet to really roar into life, despite the service of Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva behind them.
Nevertheless, the hosts are favourites for Monday night’s game, and an early goal could be key for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Everton have been a bogey team for City in the past, and having taken four points off City last year they could be again.
Wayne Rooney in particular had a habit of scoring against City in Manchester derby fixtures, and after a goal on the opening day of the season he will be keen for another.
If City play like they did against Real Madrid, Tottenham and West Ham in pre-season, it will be a huge home win on Monday, but Everton have proved their resilience already this season.
This, however, is the new-look visitors’ biggest test yet and could see their first defeat and goals conceded of the season.
Manchester City are bigger favourites than perhaps they ought to be for Monday’s fixture, but they are still expected to beat Everton and you can back them at 1/3 with William Hill to do just that.
With Vincent Kompany, John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi at the back, they have looked solid meanwhile – and they are 11/10 to win to nil with Bet365 and Ladbrokes.
Everton, and Wayne Rooney in particular, are perfectly capable of breaching the City defence, however, and a City win with both teams to score is 2/1 with William Hill and Ladbrokes.
On the other hand, Bet365 are offering 10/11 on City recording another clean sheet to follow up their opening day shut-out.
The first goal is going to be vital on Monday night, and City are 10/11 with Bet365 and Ladbrokes to be leading at half-time and full-time.
Manchester City will not have it all their own way against Everton, but if they can get an early first goal they can go on to win fairly comfortably.
Ilkay Gundogan made his long-awaited return from injury in City’s friendly with Girona in mid-week, while Benjamin Mendy is also back in training. City are likely to stick with the XI which served them well at the end of pre-season, and again against Brighton on the opening day, however.
Sergio Aguero opened the scoring on Saturday, after a pin-point pass from David Silva, and both men will be vital to the Blues’ hopes this season.
City won their opening game of the season away at newly-promoted Brighton, leaving it late to win 2-0. A much-changed team then headed to Girona to play a friendly against City’s feeder club, which they lost 1-0.

Having started with three-at-the-back against Stoke last weekend, Ronald Koeman switched to a back four at half-time and may opt for the less-expansive formation against City on Monday, as Everton look to contain their hosts’ attacking threat. Gylfi Sigurdsson could make his Everton debut, but is more likely to feature from the bench having not played in pre-season for Swansea.
Wayne Rooney marked his return to Everton with a goal on the opening day of the Premier League season. As a Manchester United player, he scored 11 goals against City.
After beating Ruzembork home and away in Europa League qualifying, Everton then beat Stoke City 1-0 on the opening day of the league season. They hosted Hajduk Split in the Europa League play-off in mid-week and won 2-0 to continue their fine start to the season – they are yet to concede a goal in a competitive fixture.
