Chelsea will win this match.
Prior to West Brom’s most recent relegation, Chelsea were unbeaten in their last six matches against them – winning five of those. In the 2017-18 season – West Brom’s last in the top flight – they lost 4-0 and 3-0 to the Blues.
Chelsea were matching Liverpool in a very even game last weekend but Andreas Christensen’s red card changed the match.
Thiago Silva could make his Premier League debut to replace him, however, and Ben Chilwell is available too.
After spending big in the summer, the Blues’ first-team squad is starting to come together and this is a match they really should be winning.
Kai Havertz showed his goalscoring threat in mid-week and it is Timo Werner’s turn to fire this time as the Blues look to get back to winning ways in the league.
Inconsistency harmed them last season too, but regardless – this is a team they should be beating. They did lost to Liverpool because they played badly – in fact, they were very well matched until the red card.
Chelsea are welcoming more new players to full fitness too, and with Silva and Chilwell in, Hakim Ziyech is the only other not yet back.
It all bodes well for Chelsea, who take on a West Brom team who have not yet hit top form on their return to the top flight.
Defeat to Everton was, like Chelsea’s loss to Liverpool, a consequence of being down to ten man.
But Chelsea are very much favourites for this match.
Chelsea are odds-on favourites to beat West Brom and can be backed at 3/8 to win with Betway and 10Bet.
Both teams to score, after West Brom’s high-scoring loss last weekend, is a best price of 19/20 with Bet365.
Over 2.5 goals is a best price of 4/6 with Bet365, meanwhile.
Timo Werner is a best price of 17/20 to score at any time.
Chelsea have a chance to get straight back to winning ways in the Premier League.
Kieran Gibbs is suspended after last weekend’s red card, while Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher is ineligible. Branislav Ivanovic is not expected to start to face his former club, while Ahmed Hegazi, Kamil Grosicki and Hal Robson-Kanu are all injury doubts too. Kenneth Zohore will definitely miss out.
Grady Diangana – Opened the scoring last weekend before the heavy defeat, the former West Ham man is a promising attacking player for the Baggies.
Matheus Pereira – Another key signing for the Baggies after a successful loan spell last season and another to find the net last weekend.
Callum Robinson – The third of three attacking loanees to help them to promotion last season before signing a permanent deal.
West Brom have lost three of their last four matches, including Tuesday’s defeat to Brentford on penalties. Hal Robson-Kanu scored twice from the spot in normal time, but twice they were pegged back on their way to their shoot-out defeat. Last weekend, meanwhile, Kieran Gibbs’ red card hampered them in a 5-2 loss away to Everton.
Edouard Mendy is unlikely to be rushed straight into the line-up after signing from Rennes. That could mean one final chance for Kepa Arrizabalaga after his howler against Liverpool at the weekend. Andreas Christensen is suspended after being sent off in that game. Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell are available, but Hakim Ziyech remains sidelined along with Christian Pulisic.
Kai Havertz – A mid-week hat-trick, albeit against Barnsley, could be the catalyst he needs for a big debut season.
Timo Werner – Still looking for his first league goal for Chelsea, but the German striker’s goalscoring reputation goes before him.
Thiago Silva – Could help to bolster Chelsea’s defence as he looks to build upon a solid debut in the Carabao Cup.
Chelsea started the league season with a 3-1 win at Brighton and looked good value after a momentary scare at 1-1. They lost 2-0 to Liverpool last weekend but thrashed Barnsley 6-0 with Kai Havertz smashing in a hat-trick.
