Everton will win this match.
Everton last beat Tottenham back in 2012, since when they have lost seven times and drawn seven times too. The last two games have been draws, however, including the 1-1 at Goodison Park – Dele Alli opened the scoring before Cenk Tosun’s last-minute leveller. Here are the results of their last five matches:
Nov 03, 2019: Everton 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur
May 12, 2019: Tottenham Hotspur 2-2 Everton
Dec 23, 2018: Everton 2-6 Tottenham Hotspur
Jan 13, 2018: Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 Everton
Sep 09, 2017: Everton 0-3 Tottenham Hotspur
Everton have an awful record in this fixture, but looking at recent performances they may not have a better chance to put things right.
They impressed by beating Leicester last time out, making it seven points from a possible nine on their return to action with only one goal conceded.
It puts them a point behind Spurs and a win will lift them into the top half of the table.
Richarlison scored last time out and Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been a key striker for them this season, while players are coming back from injury too.
Spurs, on the other hand, beat West Ham but their 3-1 defeat to out-of-form Sheffield United was a major blow to their hopes of a strong finish to the season.
Jose Mourinho questioned his team’s desire afterwards and that criticism should sting.
If it does not have the desired effect, however, Spurs will be back to where they were before lockdown, even with Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min back.
In other words, they will be in the mire, with little else to play for this season other than stopping a dismal drop to what would be their worst finishing position for some time.
It could all change with a win in this match, of course, but it is hard to back them at the moment.
Tottenham are favourites with the bookmakers but the form book suggests otherwise. Everton could be well worth backing at a generous 13/5 to win with 888sport and Betfair.
Spurs have scored in their recent matches and have Harry Kane back, however, so both teams to score at 8/11 with Paddy Power and Betfair seems reasonable.
Likewise, you can get 19/20 from Betfair on over 2.5 goals being scored in this game.
Harry Kane is a best price of 13/10 to score at any time with Ladbrokes. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is 15/8 with Betfair and Paddy Power.
Tottenham Hotspur have not played well recently, and Everton have a real chance to end their dismal run in this fixture.
Dele Alli picked up a knock in training but Jose Mourinho expects the England international to be fit. Troy Parrott could be in contention but Japhet Tangana has not returned to training quite yet and Juan Foyth is definitely sidelined.
Harry Kane – Scored again last time out – his second in two games – even if it was too late to make a difference to the result.
Son Heung-Min – Set up each of Kane’s last two goals and Spurs need their South Korean star to start finding the net himself too.
Hugo Lloris – Now is the time for the captain and goalkeeper to step up for Spurs – they need to tighten up at the back.
After ending a seven-match winless streak with a 2-0 win against rivals West Ham – including Harry Kane’s first goal since his return from injury – they lost again last time out, 3-1 at Sheffield United. Kane scored again, late on, but Spurs are now well off the pace for European qualification.
Theo Walcott is not expected to be fit for this game, but Djibril Sidibe is back in contention. Yerry Mina has already recovered and Fabian Delph is due back too. Everton may be unchanged from the win against Leicester, however, including young Anthony Gordon on the wing.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin – Led the way this season with 13 goals, even if he has not managed to pick up his goalscoring streak on his return to action.
Richarlison – His opener last time out was his 11th goal of another solid season up front, albeit not quite as consistent as previously.
Gylfi Sigurdsson – So key in recent seasons, the Icelandic former Spurs man netted from the spot last time out, which could be the boost he needs to get back to his best.
Michael Keane scored the only goal as Everton beat Norwich for their first win on their return, after opening with a goalless draw against Liverpool. They conceded for the first time post-lockdown last time out, but only after Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson had already netted against Leicester. Everton held on to win 2-1.
