Liverpool will win this match.
These two have met on numerous occasions – 165 to be precise – in more than 100 years of top flight battles. Liverpool hold the advantage with 78 wins to Tottenham’s 47, and drilling down into the numbers further we find an even more interesting angle.
In the last five matches between these pair at White Hart Lane, Liverpool have on four and drawn the other; a real pattern-breaker compared to most other teams in the country. Two of those wins came via 3-0 and 5-0 verdicts, so clearly the Reds don’t fear travelling to the capital.

There are so many things to consider in weighing up this match that knowing which is of the most importance is tricky. Let’s take a look at Tottenham: unbeaten so far, and having conceded just a solitary goal we don’t need to worry about their defending. Going forward they may only have netted twice but they have missed plenty of chances, and many pundits are predicting that the Kane-Janssen strike pairing could be a prolific one.
Liverpool’s strengths and weaknesses are obvious: they have scored nine goals in three matches (league and cup) this term, and yet have conceded five in their two Premier League matches to date. What was most concerning about their 0-2 reverse at Burnley was that they had 80% possession and yet still struggled to find a breakthrough; given that Spurs will field a midfield shield in Dier-Wanyama ahead of their rock solid back four, and that doesn’t bode well for the Merseysiders.
We very, very rarely go against the head-to-head stats, but there is enough ammunition here to support Tottenham’s hopes for a second consecutive home win.
Bearing all of the above in mind, there is plenty of betting value to be enjoyed here. Firstly, let’s take Tottenham at 7/5 to end their White Hart Lane hoodoo against the Reds; they look a far more reliable outfit than Klopp’s side at the moment. But we expect there to be goals given Liverpool’s defensive concerns in particular, so the 4/5 on Over 2.5 Goals is of appeal.
Logically and statistically, both teams to score at 4/7 has to be considered too given Liverpool’s propensity for swift attacking play on the counter attack; Spurs being on the front foot should suit them.
A decent enough start to life in 2016/17 for a Spurs side who fell apart when contending for the Premier League title last time around. They will be hoping to stay in the mix this year, and three points against their alma mater Liverpool will be most welcome.
Goalkeeper:- Michel Vorm
Defenders:- Kyle Walker, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose
Midfielders:- Eric Dier, Victor Wanyama, Cristian Ericsson, Erik Lamela

Schizophrenic is perhaps the best word to describe Liverpool’s start to the campaign: after looking world-class in defeating Arsenal 4-3 on the opening weekend, they found themselves unable to break down stubborn Burnley resistance last week and succumbed to a 0-2 defeat. There is still plenty for Jurgen Klopp and his troops to work on.
