Our Prediction Tip

England will win this match.

England and Sweden have met each other multiple times in the past, including being drawn in the same group at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, and again at Euro 2012. They could not be separated in either previous World Cup match – a 1-1 draw in 2002 and a 2-2 draw despite Joe Cole’s wonder goal in 2006. England had the edge in their most recent competitive fixture, however, winning 3-2 with Danny Welbeck grabbing the winner. He and Ashley Young are the only players from that team in the World Cup squad. Welbeck scored in the most recent fixture, a friendly in 2012, too but Zlatan Ibrahimovic stole the show with all four goals in a 4-2 Sweden win on a day Raheem Sterling made his England debut aged just 17.

Sweden vs England Stats

England have won one and drawn two of their three previous major tournament matches against Sweden.

England have not got past the World Cup quarter-finals since 1990. Sweden last achieved a semi-final place in 1994.

Harry Kane has scored in each of his last six England appearances, and leads the race for the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup.

Germany are the only one of Sweden’s last six opponents to score against them.

England vs Sweden Betting Tips

If England are to reach their first World Cup semi-final since 1990 they will need to do what only one team has managed in the last six matches – score against Sweden.

Robin Olsen and his rock-solid defence, led by captain Andreas Granqvist, have kept five clean sheets in their last six games but Golden Boot leader Harry Kane will be the key for England.

Kane has scored in his last six England matches, and has six already at Russia 2018 – including three penalties. Coupled with England’s set-piece threat, you can understand the national confidence,

Nevertheless, England should be wary of getting too far ahead of themselves. They had to come through a bruising encounter with Colombia to get this far and now face a Sweden side full of confidence.

The Swedes qualified ahead of the Netherlands, beat Italy in their World Cup play-off, finished ahead of Germany in their group and have now become only the second team to beat Switzerland since Euro 2016.

England are also in decent form, however, which is what makes it so hard to separate these two teams – one defeat in 12 for Gareth Southgate’s side prior to this game.

England are favourites, however, and after exorcising their demons by winning their first ever World Cup penalty shoot-out, they may just have the momentum they need to edge this one.

Sweden vs England Recommended bets with odds

England are odds-on favourites to beat Sweden at 19/20 with Bet365, Betfair, Betway, 10Bet and 888sport compared to a best price of 4/1 on Sweden winning.

This is likely to be a close one, however, and Betfair’s best price of 8/5 on under 1.5 goals is tempting. Under 2.5 goals is 1/2 at Betfair, Ladbrokes and Betway too.

Sweden have kept five clean sheets in their last six matches, while England have conceded one in each of their Russia 2018 matches. Jordan Pickford was in inspired form against Colombia, however, and could be on for a first World Cup clean sheet. You can bet against both teams to score at 4/6 with Betfair.

As for goals, Sweden have lacked an attacking impetus in all of their matches apart from the 3-0 win against Mexico. England, by contrast, have Harry Kane in superb form.

Kane is 11/10 to score at any time with Betfair, Ladbrokes, Paddy Power, Betway and 888sport.

Sweden vs England Top three bets

1) Both teams to score = “NO” at 4/6 with Betfair
2) Total goals = under 1.5 at 8/5 with Betfair.
3) Harry Kane to score at any time at 11/10 with Betway

Sweden vs England Prediction

There is less between these sides than it seems, with Sweden in good form – particularly defensively. But England are favourites and should have just enough to book their semi-final place.

Correct score prediction: Sweden 0-1 England

Correct score best odds: 23/5 (888sports)

Sweden Team News

Mikael Lustig will miss the match against England due to suspension but Sebastian Larsson is back from his one-game ban to slot back into the midfield. Larsson will replace Gustav Svensson, while Emil Krafth looks the most likely to start at right-back having replaced Lustig late in the second-round win against Switzerland.

Sweden Key Players

Marcus Berg (striker) - While he has not scored at the World Cup, he is Sweden’s most obvious goal threat up front having been their top scorer in qualifying.

Andreas Granqvist (defender) - Has helped Sweden to five clean sheets in their last six matches, as well as converting two penalties at the World Cup so far.

Emil Forsberg (winger) - Voted Swedish midfielder of the year three times in four years, and lived up to the hype with the deflected winner against Switzerland.

Sweden Round of 16

Sweden 1-0 Switzerland (Forsberg)

Emil Forsberg’s deflected strike was enough to book Sweden’s place in the quarter-finals in a narrow win against Switzerland. Michael Lang was sent off late on for Switzerland for a professional foul, but a VAR replay overturned the initial penalty decision with a free-kick given instead. Nevertheless, Sweden held on to win 1-0.

Sweden Team Form

Not only are Germany the only team to have beaten Sweden in their last six matches, they are also the only team to have scored against them. Sweden drew 0-0 with both Denmark and Peru before the World Cup before their 1-0 defeat of South Korea thanks to Andreas Granqvist’s penalty. A 3-0 win against Mexico - the only time Sweden team have scored more than once in a game since thrashing Luxembourg in qualifying - earned  their second-round place, before the narrow win against Switzerland.

Sweden Predicted Starting Line up

Expected Line up: 4-4-2

England Team News

England had a number of injury concerns following the bruising encounter with Colombia but only Jamie Vardy and Ashley Young are rated doubtful for the game against Sweden. Kyle Walker, Harry Kane and Dele Alli look set to recover from their own minor injuries. If Young misses out, Danny Rose is likely to be the only player to come into the team.

England Key Players

Harry Kane (striker) - England Football team captain has scored in his last six consecutive international appearances, including six in three games in Russia

Kieran Trippier (right wing-back) - Once again impressed against Colombia with his tireless running on the right, as well as scoring in the penalty shoot-out.

John Stones (centre-back) - A composed figure playing the ball out of defence and scorer of two goals against Panama to prove England’s set-piece threat.

England Round of 16

England 1-1 Colombia (Kane; England win 4-3 on penalties)

England looked to be heading through to the quarter-finals thanks to Harry Kane’s penalty against Colombia, after being wrestled to the ground by Carlos Sanchez in a fiery encounter with the South Americans. Yerry Mina’s stoppage-time header forced extra time and then penalties, however. Jordan Henderson’s miss gave Colombia the advantage but Mateus Uribe hit the bar and Jordan Pickford saved brilliantly from Carlos Bacca before Eric Dier slotted in the winner.

England Team Form

England had won four straight games before their defeat to Belgium in the final round of Group G fixtures. The draw with Colombia – and penalty shoot-out win – means they have lost just one of their last 14 matches, however. In Russia, England beat Tunisia 2-1 thanks to Harry Kane’s stoppage-time winner, put six past Panama in a 6-1 win (Kane scoring three) and then lost their match to Belgium 1-0. They bounced back against Colombia, with Kane notching his sixth goal of the tournament.

England Predicted Starting Line up

Expected Line up: 3-1-4-2

Both Sweden and England know they will not have a better chance of reaching the World Cup final, on paper at least, than this year. Russia or Croatia await in the semi-finals but with Sweden boasting a solid defensive record it will not be easy for Harry Kane and his England team-mates to break them down. Sweden's last match was settled by a single goal, whereas England went to penalties. This could be similarly close.
Sweden have only conceded in one of their last six matches - a 2-1 group-stage defeat to Germany.
