Southampton vs Newcastle Betting Tips and Odds

Bet365 have the following odds available for this match:

Southampton are at 3/5, a draw is at 3/1, and Newcastle are at 17/4.

Southampton will come into this match in a downturn of form of late.  In all competitions, they have just one win in their last six and it’s only one win in four PL games now as well.  Luckily for them, they are still on 34 points and in 13th place, so they should have enough to see them across the line to safety.  Unless, of course, they get nothing for the remainder of the season.  They are seven clear of south coast rivals Bournemouth in 18th, so they will feel like they are just about there.

Newcastle are in a similar spot, but they are more precarious.  They are only a spot below and two points back of the Saints, but those two points could be pivotal and/or costly.  You just never know.  As such, they have to keep trying to pick up anything they can.  Of late, that has been draws, as they have three of them in their last five fixtures in the PL.  Those are the only points they have in that stretch, though they are now in the quarters of the FA Cup.  That’ll give them something to be happy about.

The Saints’ home record thus far in the Premier League has been simply atrocious.  This team, for whatever reason, just does not play well at home, having only picked up 14 points from 14 games.  Despite those numbers, they have seven of those points in the last five games, so they are looking up a bit.  As for Newcastle, they are far from brilliant travelers.  They have just 11 points from 14 games, taking three wins and two draws so far.  In their last five, they have only two points, so that is another indicator of hard times.

Betfair have no for both teams scoring at 1.95.

Ladbrokes have no goals in both halves at evens.

Southampton vs Newcastle Prediction

It might not be too pretty right now, but Newcastle are just taking a point where they can get it.  They can inch their way closer to safety by doing so, and they may well take another from this affair.

Correct Score Prediction: Southampton 0-0 Newcastle

Southampton Team News

Ralph Hasenhuttl will be missing Nathan Redmond due to an injury that will most likely sideline him until after the next international break.  Moussa Djenepo’s status is up in the air over apparent personal issues.

Southampton Key Man

Danny Ings has been a huge part of the success of the Saints this term, and it’s hard to see him not being restored to the starting XI here.  He leads them, by far, with 15 goals to his name and he will give them a cutting edge up front that others just don’t provide consistently.  One man that can provide, regardless of the position he plays from, is James Ward-Prowse.  The midfielder turned full back is excellent on set pieces and can also whip a ball from a cross as well, making him a possible ‘assister.’

Southampton Team Form

Southampton have four losses and a win in their last five matches:

3-1 loss at West Ham
2-0 home win vs Aston Villa
1-2 home loss vs Burnley
3-2 loss at Tottenham (FA Cup)
4- loss at Liverpool

Southampton Predicted Starting Line up

Expected Line up: 4-4-2

Newcastle Team News

Steve Bruce still has a lot of injury issues, but some of them are getting better.  It’s been worse for him.  Still yet, he will be without Andy Carroll, Emil Krafth, Ciaran Clark, Jack Colback, Paul Dummett, and Jetro Willems for this trip.

Newcastle Key Man

After his showing in the FA Cup, another fine display in that comp, Miguel Almiron has to be the man to watch here.  He scored a brace, with both goals being fine efforts, to help take the Magpies past the Baggies.  They need him to keep up this goal scoring form to give them a shot at winning again.  Up front, Joelinton looked bright as well, as he has typically done against lower league foes.  He assisted Almiron, but the real question is whether he can provide or score in the top flight more.

Newcastle Team Form

Newcastle have two wins, a draw, and two losses in their last five matches:

2-3 win at West Brom (FA Cup)
0-0 home draw vs Burnley
1-0 loss at Crystal Palace
4-0 loss at Arsenal
2-3 extra time win at Oxford (FA Cup)

Newcastle Predicted Starting Line up

Expected Line up: 4-2-3-1

Newcastle have had the rub of the green of late with the Saints, and though it would not appear at first glance that they would have the advantage here, they surely aren't huge underdogs, either. Saints have been putrid at home, even if they have improved of late, and that sort of record leaves the door open for Newcastle. As a result, you could not count yourself as being shocked if the Magpies grab a result from their trip to the south coast.
Newcastle have three wins and two draws in their last five PL clashes with Southampton.
