SOU FC vs LFC Betting Tips and Odds

Bet365 have the following odds available for this match:

Southampton are at 6/1, a draw is at 14/1, and Liverpool are at 2/5.

Southampton had a not so memorable beginning to their Premier League season last weekend, getting pushed aside by Burnley by a 3-0 score line at Turf Moor.  The Clarets bulldozed their way to the points, scoring three times in 12 minute period to get off to an ideal start.  The Saints really can’t afford matches like that, as they will know those are the ones that will see them out of any possible relegation battle.  As badly as they want to be, they are just no longer able to trouble teams like Liverpool, such is how far they have fallen recently.

Liverpool began their campaign with a home win over Norwich by a score of 4-1.  Though they did look shaky at the back at times, their attack was much too good for the Canaries and they easily saw them off to jump out in front for a time.  On Wednesday, they followed that up by taking home the UEFA Super Cup, winning it on penalties over Chelsea.  It was a very hard fought match that will leave them far from well rested, so it’s going to be a tough ask for them here if they don’t rotate.  Even with some changes, you have to like them to be favorites here.

Mane scoring twice or more is at 6.0 via Betfair.

Ladbrokes have no for both sides scoring at 10/11.

Southampton vs Liverpool Prediction

Even with their midweek fixture, Liverpool have immense quality at the moment that can overcome the obstacles and see off the Saints.  It’ll be entertaining and not all too easy, but the Reds will take three points with them back to Anfield.

Correct Score Prediction: Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Southampton Team News

Ralph Hasenhuttl will have a full team to pick from here at St. Mary’s, so that is one plus side to having to face the Reds after being thumped away to Burnley.

Southampton Key Man

Nathan Redmond has been the bain of Liverpool in the past for the Saints, and Southampton fans will hope he can be that again here.  He has electric pace on the counter and fine close control.  Those two things could be what unlocks a much tougher Reds defence these days.  In midfield, Pierre Hojbjerg is one to keep a close watch on.  The Dane is adept at pressing and though his work goes unnoticed, he’s been an integral part of this team’s survival of late.  They need a massive game from here to cling on and earn something from it.

Southampton Predicted Starting Line up

Liverpool Team News

Jurgen Klopp will have to very seriously weigh whether or not to rotate his side after a very long 120 minutes and then penalties against Chelsea in a relentless outing on Wednesday night in Istanbul.  So that will be on the mind, as well as them still not having goalkeeper Alisson due to injury.

Liverpool Key Man

Sadio Mane only just returned to the Reds but in his first full start back he rose to the fore, grabbing two goals to help lead them to an eventual win on penalties over Chelsea.  The Senegalese's first strike wasn’t the prettiest, but the second was fantastic and he’ll look to follow up against his former club here.  A big part of his success was Roberto Firmino, who came on at half time with his club trailing 1-0.  He soon provided an assist for Mane and set him up in extra time as well, further demonstrating how vital he is to the Reds in the process.

Liverpool Team Form

Liverpool have two draws, two wins, and a loss in their last five matches:

2-2 draw, penalty win vs Chelsea (UEFA Super Cup)
4-1 home win vs Norwich
1-1 draw, penalty loss vs Manchester City (Community Shield)
3-1 win vs Lyon (Fri)
0-3 loss vs Napoli (Fri)

Liverpool Predicted Starting Line up

Expected Line up: 4-3-3

The Saints used to be a side that caused Liverpool supreme troubles, but that was a long time ago. All joking aside, Liverpool have became the team they are partly because of taking some of the best the south coast club had to offer. That's left Southampton floundering of late, and it's going to see them struggle once again here. Their relentless pressing will make it hard on Liverpool, but in the end that game plan will play into the hands of the Merseysiders.
For a time, Southampton were a bogey side of sorts for Liverpool, but the Reds have beaten the Saints four times in a row now and are unbeaten in their last five with only one goal surrendered in those matches.
