Germany will win this match.

Through 15 matches, Northern Ireland have a better record than one might expect against Germany.  They have just twice wins but also have four draws in a fixture that just seems to keep on coming up of late.  Here's a look at the last four results:

Oct 11, 2016: Germany 2-0 N. Ireland (WCQ)

Group C is setting up to be extremely interesting.  Through four matches, it’s Northern Ireland who are on top with 12 points to their names.  Beneath them is Germany, who are now three points off of them after their loss to the Netherlands, who are third on six, though they have played a game fewer than each.  This represents a very real chance for the Northern Irish side, provided they manage to somehow get draws against each.

Northern Ireland might not have the biggest names in their team, but this is a team that has real spirit and togetherness to it.  That helped them get to Euro 2016, and it might just get them automatically into this 2020 edition.  They have only surrendered two goals in the group so far and even if this is the hardest test so far, those victories will have buoyed them greatly.  In the last year, they have six wins, a draw, and three losses.  They have won five in a row.

Germany are in real trouble, even if the group standings don’t indicate as much.  They have not played well since the 2014 World Cup in truth, and it’s got to surely end soon for Low if he doesn’t turn this ship around.  A loss, or perhaps a draw here, might end his tenure in charge.  At any rate, Germany can’t afford to not qualify here to follow up a Nations League relegation.  That would double their embarrassment and send them running for cover.  In their last year, they have five wins, two draws, and three losses.

Norther Ireland vs Germany Match Prediction

Germany will face a well-motivated and staunch rearguard in Belfast, but it’s going to turn out that these three points go to them.  They have to grab them to keep the Dutch behind them, and they do to break some hearts.

Correct Score Prediction: Northern Ireland 0-2 Germany

N. Ireland Team News

Michael O’Neill rotated his side fully in the friendly win over Luxembourg on Thursday, paving the way for him to have a very fresh side ahead of this key home clash with the 2016 World champions.  Defender Michael Smith, midfielder Jordan Jones, and forwards Paul Smyth and Will Grigg are all out nursing injuries.

N. Ireland Key players

Winger Josh Magennis may not be all that well known outside of British football circles, but he has certainly been playing well and is a real bright spot for his side.  He has two goals in qualification already and will be asked to possibly come up with another here, whether it’s by scoring or conjuring up a chance for someone else.  The other to watch will be goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell.  Sure he is ‘just’ a keeper, but the Germans are going to have plenty of chances here, and if the home side are to produce a shock he’ll need luck and to make some fine saves to pull it off.

N. Ireland Team Form

Northern Ireland have won each of their last five matches:

0-1 home win vs Luxembourg (Fri)
0-1 win at Belarus
1-2 win at Estonia
2-1 home win vs Belarus
2-0 home win vs Estonia

Northern Ireland Predicted Starting Line up

Expected Line up: 4-3-3

Germany Team News

Joachim Low could well be managing for his job here such has been the run of the team recently.  He will do so with a seemingly strong team, but the mentality just isn’t there any longer.  At any rate, he has left out the likes of defender Antonio Rudiger and midfielder Sebastian Rudy as he seeks a return to former glory.

Germany Key Players

It’s about time that Germany started letting some younger players make an impact, and that’s what Serge Gnabry is trying to do.  The speedy winger scored the opener on Friday, one that ultimately did not hold up, and he’ll hope any contribution will prove to be a telling one this time around.  Alongside him, they need fellow young up-and-comer Timo Werner to have a good showing, too.  The RB Leipzig man has scored a lot of goals at club level, and they need him to become the next Klose to drive them to the next level.

Germany Team Form

Germany have a loss, three wins, and a draw in their last five matches:

4-2 home loss vs Netherlands
8-0 home win vs Estonia
0-2 win at Belarus
2-3 win at Netherlands
1-1 home draw vs Serbia (Fri)

Germany Predicted Starting Line up

Expected Line-up: 3-4-3

As well as Northern Ireland are going about their business right now, it's downright impossible to pick them here. A draw would be fantastic for them and would get them a step closer to reaching the Euros, but it's just so unlikely to occur. Germany are in a rut, but they will be surely be inspired to dig their way out of it. Northern Ireland are just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Germany haven't lost in ten meetings with Northern Ireland dating back to 1992. They have a seven-match winning streak over them since '97 as well.
