Their league meeting at Carrow Road earlier this season was the first between these two teams since the Championship season in 2016/17. Teemu Pukki scored a hat-trick in a dominant home win for the Canaries, with Jonjo Shelvey’s last-minute goal only a consolation for the visitors.
Newcastle have been inconsistent this season with a poor attacking record contributing to their downfall so far.
Though still in mid-table, they need to start turning draws into wins if they are to pull clear of the bottom three – though they have at least become harder to beat in recent weeks.
A frustrating goalless draw with Oxford United meant they failed to harness the momentum of their last-gap win against Chelsea and even later, more dramatic draw with Everton.
Their long injury list is also a concern, and shows no sign of easing as more players are forced into the treatment room seemingly every week.
But Nabil Bentaleb has been signed in midfield and Allan Saint-Maximin is back as a creative player on the wing and both are positives for Steve Bruce.
Norwich won away from home in their recent FA Cup match against Burnley, but the Canaries’ away league form is dire – just five away points in the league all season.
It is a large reason for their position at the foot of the table, and Newcastle have a big opportunity in this match to put things right.
Steve Bruce and his players were left embarrassed by their 3-1 defeat at Carrow Road last time these teams met, but they can redress the balance with a win in this game.

Allan Saint-Maximin – His return from an injury is a boost as Newcastle look to get back to a more dynamic front line.
Newcastle have got back on track but remain inconsistent at the same time. They are unbeaten in their last six matches, but have drawn four of them – including the last two against Everton, thanks to Florian Lejeune’s two dramatic stoppage-time goals, and the goalless draw with Oxford last weekend. Their last win was at home to Chelsea, when Isaac Hayden scored a 90th-minute winner.
Ben Godfrey is still suspended after his red card against Bournemouth, while Timm Klose is a long-term absentee. Grant Hanley has been back in the centre of defence recently. Emiliano Buendia, Todd Cantwell and Ibrahim Amadou will all be assessed ahead of the game.
