Chile have only won ten of their of their 32 previous games against Mexico, compared to Mexico’s 17 wins, but the most recent of those was a big one. Chile ended a four-match winless streak in this fixture in June 2016 – just 17 days after losing 1-0 to Mexico in a friendly – by thrashing them 7-0. Eduardo Vargas scored four goals in that win, while Edson Puch scored the first and last and Alexis Sanchez also netted. It was Chile’s joint-biggest win in the competition, and Mexico’s heaviest defeat.

Neither Mexico nor Chile have been in particularly good form as they look to rebuild and overhaul their aging squads.
Chile will have the most concern, however, after losing 3-0 to Peru last time out to continue a bad run of form that has seen them win just four of their last 15 matches.
Failure to qualify for the World Cup was a big shock and Chile appear to have still not fully reacted to that.
Mexico, on the other hand, started the World Cup well until a 3-0 defeat to Sweden cost them top spot in their group and another loss to Brazil ended their World Cup run in the second round once again.
They lost their next two games after that too, but the 3-2 win – showing plenty of resolve to twice come from behind against Costa Rica is a platform to now build from.
Raul Jimenez, Hirving Lozano and Henry Martin are among the players who could come into the team having started as substitutes last time out and all three are capable of goals.
Jimenez has been in good form Wolves this season too, and will be a key component of Mexico’s attacking line-up.
Alexis Sanchez’s likely return is a boost for Chile, meanwhile, but he still has plenty to prove after an indifferent season at club level so far.
Sanchez is one of the experienced players still in the Chile squad, but those players all need to stand up an be counted.
Against Peru, they did not do that. If they fail again against Mexico, it will be another defeat for Chile.
Mexico are favourites to beat Chile at 23/20 with Bet365, Ladbrokes and Betfair and are worth backing with Chile so out of form.
Neither side has been impressive defensively lately, however, and both teams to score has been set at 13/15 with 10Bet and over 2.5 goals will return 11/10 with Ladbrokes.
Raul Jimenez has scored penalties in two of Mexico’s last three games and, as the central striker, he is favourite to score again at any time – 888sport are offering 9/4 on the Wolves man.
Mexico have been out of form whereas Chile still are. With defensive issues on both sides there could be goals, but the hosts are favourites to win.
Mexico have a new-look squad and both Gibran Lajud and Raul Gudino made their debuts in goal against Costa Rica, Lajud starting and Gudino replacing him at half-time. Hugo Gonzalez could start between the sticks this time out, as Mexico search for Guillermo Ochoa’s replacement. Josecarlos Van Rankin also made his debut last time out, with Mexico’s first home friendlies since the World Cup featuring hardly any of their established World Cup players. Hirving Lozano and Nestor Araujo should return against Chile, however, having only been on the bench last time out. Raul Jimenez also started as a substitute and is likely to come in to the starting XI.

Henry Martin – Stepped off the bench to score against Costa Rica – he will hope his first international goal is the first of many.
Hirving Lozano – One of their star players at the World Cup, scoring against Germany, he is likely to return to the starting line-up to face Chile.
Mexico’s win against Costa Rica ended a four-match losing streak, which had included their final two games at the World Cup too. Post-Russia, they started with a 4-1 defeat to Uruguay despite Raul Jimenez having scored a penalty to make it 1-1 midway after 25 minutes. They lost 1-0 to the USA in their next match, but Victor Guzman, Henry Martin and Jimenez scored in last week’s 3-2 defeat of Costa Rica – a game Mexico were twice trailing in.
Like Mexico, Chile are in the process of rebuilding with several senior players no longer involved. One of those, former captain Claudio Bravo, is out injured anyway, while Pablo Hernandez and Gabriel Arias are among the latest players to withdraw from the squad. With Bravo and Arias out, there could be a debut in goal for Brayan Cortes or Swindon Town’s Lawrence Vigouroux. Alfonso Parot is the only other uncapped player in the squad ahead of the game in Mexico. Alexis Sanchez could feature after sitting out the game against Peru at his club’s request.
Alexis Sanchez – One of the senior players not to give up on the national team, he will hope his late winner against Newcastle for Man United revives his fortunes after a disappointing season so far.
Arturo Vidal – With 102 caps and 24 goals in midfield, the Barcelona man has also stuck with the national team and now offers stacks of experience in the middle.
Brayan Cortes – The number-one jersey is up for grabs, and the Colo-Colo goalkeeper will hope to stake his claim for it.
Chile’s defeat to Peru was only their second defeat of 2018 but they have also only won one of their last six matches – a 1-0 friendly win in Serbia. Since the summer they have played just twice, drawing 0-0 with South Korea in Suwon before the heavy defeat to Peru last time out in Miami.
