Liverpool

Our Prediction Tip

Manchester United will win this match.

Manchester United have beaten Liverpool on 88 occasions, while Liverpool have 76 wins in this fixture and there have been 65 draws. Liverpool’s 3-1 win at Anfield in December was just their second in their last 11 games against United, however, as Sadio Mane opened the scoring and, after Jesse Lingard’s equaliser, Xherdan Shaqiri scored twice to seal a home win. Last season, the two teams drew 0-0 at Anfield – their fourth consecutive draw against each other – before Marcus Rashford’s double earned United a 2-1 win in the reverse fixture.

Here are the results of their last five competitive matches:

Dec 16, 2018: Liverpool 3-1 Manchester United

Mar 10, 2018: Manchester United 2-1 Liverpool

Oct 14, 2017: Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

Jan 15, 2017: Manchester United 1-1 Liverpool

Oct 17, 2016: Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

MUFC vs LFC Betting Tips

This fixture will have been circled on both teams’ calendars since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer started United’s resurgence.

They have not lost in the league since defeat at Anfield spelled the end of Jose Mourinho’s reign and now they are out for revenge – and the chance to put a dent in Liverpool’s title charge.

United bounced back from their first defeat under Solskjaer by beating Chelsea last time out, while Liverpool have won one of their last four (even if they have remained unbeaten in that time).

If they can continue their unbeaten run, however, they will finish the weekend back on top of the Premier League table.

There were four consecutive draws between these two teams too, until United broke that run with a home win – courtesy of Marcus Rashford’s two goals – last season.

Rashford is back in form now too, as is Paul Pogba – who scored against Chelsea – and they will be two of the biggest threats to Liverpool’s excellent defensive record.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have their front three firing. Sadio Mane has opened the scoring in each of the last three league games, and also scored the first goal when they beat United in December.

Mohamed Salah, meanwhile, now has 20 goals for the season and Liverpool will hope to punish United’s defence in the same way PSG’s clinical strikers did.

That defeat may have been the only one under Solskjaer so far, but it did show how to beat United – and reminded everyone of the defensive vulnerabilities so obvious under Jose Mourinho.

Nevertheless, in resurgent form and at home, United could still play a massive part in this season’s title race even if their own chances of topping the league seemingly faded months ago.

They will not want to give their fierce rivals an inch at Old Trafford and, if they can find a way through Liverpool’s defence – which Virgil van Dijk will return to patrol – they can get a big three points.

Liverpool vs Man United Recommended bets with odds

Liverpool’s position in the table and win in the reverse fixture means they are favourites for this game, at a best price of 11/8 to win, but you can back United at 21/10 with Befair and – at Old Trafford – that could be worth a punt.

United are back in form up front, while Liverpool’s front three remain an ever-present threat – especially in-form Mane and 20-goal Mo Salah. Both teams to score has been set at 8/13 with Bet365 and 10Bet.

There have been over 2.5 goals in each of the last two matches between these two, after a run of low-scoring draws, and over 2.5 goals again has been set at 8/11 with Bet365, Ladbrokes, Betfair, Paddy Power, Betway and 888sport.

As for those goalscorers, Marcus Rashford scored twice in this fixture last season and he is 2/1 with Bet365 and 10Bet to score at any time. Mo Salah, Liverpool’s top goalscorer, is 7/5 with Ladbrokes and Betway but he does not have the best record in this fixture.

Manchester United vs Liverpool Prediction

Liverpool may start as favourites given the current league table and the way PSG exposed United’s vulnerabilities, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side can upset the odds on home soil.

Correct Score Prediction: Manchester United 2-1 Liverpool

Man United Team News

Jesse Lingard (thigh) and Anthony Martial (groin) are both sidelined for Manchester United, while Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia are unlikely to be rushed back for such an important game. Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku started ahead of the former two in the FA Cup win against Chelsea and could retain their places as Alexis Sanchez continues to struggle for form.

Man United Key Players

Marcus Rashford – Six of his ten United goals this season have come since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over, including in each of their last five league wins.
Paul Pogba – Bounced back from his PSG red card with a goal against Chelsea in the FA Cup and his form has been the most significant sign of improvement under Solskjaer.
David de Gea – This fixture has been one in which the Spanish goalkeeper has shone before, and he will likely be busy again this weekend.

Man United Team Form

Manchester United suffered their first defeat under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when they were beaten 2-0 at home by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League but they got back to winning ways last time out with a 2-0 win at Chelsea. Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba both scored as United reached the FA Cup quarter-finals. Their most recent league game was away to Fulham, where Pogba scored twice and Anthony Martial netted the other in a 3-0 win.

Manchester United Predicted Starting Line up

Expected Line up: 4-3-3

Liverpool Team News

Liverpool remain light at the back, with Jurgen Klopp saying he did not think Dejan Lovren had any chance of recovering from his thigh injury to face United. The Croatian also missed the Champions League draw with Bayern Munich, as did Virgil van Dijk but the Dutchman is set to return at Old Trafford. Joe Gomez remains sidelined, however, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is not expected back until late next month either.

Liverpool Key Players

Mohamed Salah – While he has suffered some indifferent form in this fixture, the Egyptian does go into the game having scored his 20th goal of the season in Liverpool’s last league win.
Sadio Mane – Scored the first goal in each of Liverpool’s last three league games, having also opened the scoring against United at Anfield in December.
Virgil van Dijk – With United in resurgent form up front, Liverpool will need their giant Dutch centre-back fully fit and firing for this game.

Liverpool Team Form

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last six matches but they have drawn three of the last four. That includes the goalless Champions League draw with Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, and back-to-back 1-1 draws with Leicester and West Ham despite Sadio Mane opening the scoring in both. They won their most recent league game, however – Mane, Georginio Wijnaldum and Mohamed Salah all netting in a 3-0 defeat of Bournemouth.

Liverpool Predicted Starting Line up

Expected Line up: 4-3-3

Liverpool need a result at Old Trafford to return to the top of the Premier League but, since the two teams met at Anfield, United have been in resurgent form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Champions League defeat aside, they have been a totally changed proposition and they would love nothing more than to put a dent in Liverpool's title ambitions.
Since defeat to Liverpool ended Jose Mourinho's tenure at Man United, they are unbeaten in nine Premier League matches (eight wins) under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
