Chelsea were one of the few teams to beat Manchester City last season, winning 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in December thanks to N’Golo Kante and David Luiz. City had the last laugh, however. First they thrashed Chelsea 6-0 in the reverse league fixture – Sergio Aguero scoring a hat-trick, Raheem Sterling bagging two and Ilkay Gundogan the other – before winning the Carabao Cup on penalties after a goalless draw with the Blues at Wembley. They had already beaten Chelsea at Wembley too – Sergio Aguero scoring twice in a 2-0 win in the Community Shield.

This match should not be understated – it could define both teams’ seasons. City need to bounce back from their defeat to Liverpool, while Chelsea – having climbed to third – will be determined to stay above Pep Guardiola’s side.
Chelsea’s resurgent form, after a tricky start, has seen them scoring plenty of goals and Tammy Abraham will be keen to get at City’s defence.
For all the criticism of their defending, City have not done as badly at the back as some would have you believe.
But in a team with little other obvious weak spots, centre-back is an area of concern, and in-form Abraham could profit.
Chelsea have had their own defensive wobbles this season, however, and Sergio Aguero – who scored five goals against Chelsea last season – will be keen to add to his tally in this fixture.
Bernardo Silva’s absence is a blow, but Riyad Mahrez, David Silva, Kevin de Bruyne and Raheem Sterling mean there is no shortage of attacking quality still on show.
The key then will be which team’s defence comes out on top – and Ederson’s return to the Manchester City side will be key.

Bernardo Silva is suspended after the FA banned and fined the Portuguese winger for his social media post aimed at friend and team-mate Benjamin Mendy, which they adjudged to be racist – despite accepting Silva did not mean it maliciously. There is better news regarding Ederson, however – the goalkeeper is back from injury, meaning only Leroy Sane, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Aymeric Laporte are absent through injury now.
Sergio Aguero – Scored a hat-trick as Manchester City hit six in this fixture last season – the second time he has scored a treble against the Blues.
Raheem Sterling – Controversy off the pitch ahead while away with England can not distract from his brilliant performances on it throughout this season.
Kevin de Bruyne – The former Chelsea man has assisted ten goals already this season, as well as scoring two of his own.
Manchester City have failed to win either of their last two matches, drawing 1-1 with Atalanta in the Champions League and then losing 3-1 away to Liverpool. At the San Siro, Raheem Sterling gave City an early lead and Gabriel Jesus missed a penalty before Atalanta equalised, substitute goalkeeper Claudio Bravo was sent off and City somehow held onto a point with Kyle Walker in goal. Next up, they faced Liverpool, but the Reds grabbed an early lead amidst more VAR controversy and never looked back. Bernardo Silva’s second-half goal was merely a consolation.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Antonio Rudiger are out until next month, but Ross Barkley could return after missing out before the international break. Christian Pulisic will be assessed after suffering a hip injury prior to the international break.
