This will be the first time Juventus and Lyon have met in Europe since the Champions League group stage in 2016. On that occasion, Juventus won 1-0 away from home but the two teams drew 1-1 in Turin. Juan Cuadrado scored in the first meeting, while Gonzalo Higuain’s goal was cancelled out by Corentin Tolisso in the latter.
Lyon may have only won two of their last 13 matches in this competition, but for the second season running they find themselves in the last 16.
Their last foray to this stage ended with a heavy defeat to Barcelona, though they did at least draw their home leg.
With Juventus back to winning ways, however, a draw could be the most Lyon have to hope for in this fixture.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s supreme goalscoring form in 2020 continued with yet another strike at the weekend, while Aaron Ramsey’s goal was an important boost for the Welshman too.
Despite some significant injuries, Juventus are coping well enough – whereas Lyon are having to perform without Memphis Depay up front.
That is a big loss, albeit Houssem Aouar has stepped up in terms of goals lately and Moussa Dembele leads the line.
Their Ligue 1 form will not be reflective of their hopes in Europe, however, and Juventus go into this match as clear favourites.
It would be a surprise if the visitors did not return to Turin in full control of this tie.

Anthony Lopes is back in goal for Lyon after his recent injury troubles, and Lyon’s only major injury concerns centre around their long-term absentees – most notably Memphis Depay. Rafael is a doubt at right-back, and Leo Dubois could continue if he misses out.
Moussa Dembele – Scored his 20th goal of the season when he converted a penalty at the end of the first half against Metz on Friday night.
Houssem Aouar – Has found some good goalscoring form from midfield of late, including the winner against Marseille and his late strike to seal victory at Metz.
Marcelo – Faces the thankless task of martialing the Lyon defence in the face of the likes of Ronaldo and Dybala.
Since a 4-2 loss to PSG in Ligue 1, Lyon are unbeaten in their last three matches. They beat Marseille 1-0 in the Coupe de France thanks to Houssem Aouar’s goal, before Bertrand Traore was on target in a 1-1 league draw with Strasbourg. Most recently, Moussa Dembele and Aouar scored in a 2-0 win at Metz.
Maurizio Sarri continues to have to juggle a number of long-term injuries, with Sami Khedira, Miralem Pjanic, Douglas Costa and Merih Demiral all long-term absentees and Gonzalo Higuain also doubtful with a back injury. Maurizo Sarri has rotated the defence in recent matches, but first-choice pairing Leo Bonucci and Matthijs de Ligt could be re-united for this match.
Cristiano Ronaldo – Scored in his ninth consecutive game at the weekend, taking him to 13 goals in nine matches in 2020.
Aaron Ramsey – Scored what proved to be the match-winning goal in the win against SPAL last weekend and will hope to kick on in the second half of this season.
Paulo Dybala – Set up Ramsey’s goal against SPAL, having scored one himself in the win against Brescia to continue some improved up form up front.
Juventus have won their last two matches, following a 1-1 Coppa Italia draw with Milan. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a 90th-minute penalty in that game, while it was Paulo Dybala and Juan Cuadrado on target in Juventus’ 2-0 win against ten-man Brescia the following weekend. Last time out, Ronaldo and Aaron Ramsey scored in a 2-1 win away to SPAL.
