Liverpool will win this match.
Everton have not beaten Liverpool since October 2010, and have failed to even score in the last three matches between the two teams. While they have drawn their last two matches at Goodison Park, they blew the chance to record another goalless draw when the two teams last met at Anfield – Divock Origi pouncing deep in stoppage time after Jordan Pickford’s goalkeeping gaffe.
Here are the results of their last five competitive meetings:
Mar 03, 2019: Everton 0-0 Liverpool
Dec 02, 2018: Liverpool 1-0 Everton
Apr 07, 2018: Everton 0-0 Liverpool
Jan 05, 2018: Liverpool 2-1 Everton
Dec 10, 2017: Liverpool 1-1 Everton
Since Everton held Liverpool to a goalless draw at Goodison Park last season – a result which ultimately cost the Reds a first league title of the Premier League era – Jurgen Klopp’s side have only dropped points in one other match.
They have won 22 of the 23 matches they have played, with a 1-1 draw at Manchester United all that has stopped them boasting a 100 per cent record at this stage of the season.
Since defeat to Napoli in the Champions League, Liverpool are also unbeaten in their last 15 matches in all competitions.
They were made to sweat against Brighton, after Alisson’s red card and Lewis Dunk’s free-kick, but the 2-1 win keeps them well on course for a first league title since 1990.
Everton, on the other hand, are in big trouble. Marco Silva’s job is on the line once again after a 2-0 home defeat to Norwich City and late 2-1 defeat away to Leicester.
It leaves the Toffees just a place above the Premier League relegation places and a Merseyside Derby defeat could well spell the end of Silva’s reign.
And, particularly with this tie being played at Anfield, it is difficult to see Everton getting anything from it.
Of course, on Derby Day, form goes out of the window – but Everton’s form is poor and Liverpool’s is outstanding, and there is a good reason for that.
Liverpool will miss Alisson, but they still have a title-winning team on paper and anything but a Reds win would have to be considered a big surprise.
Liverpool are a best price of 2/5 to beat Everton with Ladbrokes.
There was only one goal across the two matches between these two teams last season, and you can bet against both teams to score ate evens with Betfair.
Under 2.5 goals, meanwhile, will return 11/8 with Bet365, Betfair and 888sport.
As for goals, in-form Sadio Mane can be backed a 11/10 to score at any time with 888sport, as can Mo Salah.
Even with the added pressures that surround a derby, Liverpool can not be considered anything but huge favourites to record another home win.
Alisson will be suspended after his red card for handling outside his area against Brighton at the weekend, forcing him to watch from the sidelines with injured Joel Matip and Fabinho. Naby Keita is fit again, but may have to make do with a place on the bench.
Sadio Mane – Last year’s joint-Golden Boot winner leads Liverpool’s goalscoring charts this season with 12 in 20 games, alongside five assists.
Mohamed Salah – The Egyptian is back to full fitness and, after a couple of games to settle back into it, will be keen to rediscover his goalscoring touch in this game.
Virgil van Dijk – Scored a last-minute winner against Everton on his Liverpool debut and has never looked back. He scored twice more at the weekend, heading in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s crosses.
Liverpool are now unbeaten in their last 15 matches in all competitions, and have won five of their last six. The one exception was the Champions League draw with Napoli, in which Dejan Lovren scored as they had to come from behind to earn a point. Either side, they beat Crystal Palace 2-1 thanks to Roberto Firmino late winner and Brighton by the same score as Virgil van Dijk scored twice. They were made to sweat in both games though – Palace equalising in the final ten minutes before Firmino’s strike, and Brighton pulling one back after Alisson’s red card for handling outside his area.
Fabian Delph could be fit to face Liverpool, while Theo Walcott is bidding to overcome a knock. Seamus Coleman, Cuco Martina, Andre Gomes and Jean-Philippe Gbamin are all sidelined.
Richarlison – Scored Everton’s last two league goals – the winner against Southampton and the opener last weekend.
Gylfi Sigurdsson – The Brazilian has rediscovered some of his best form, so now it is the turn of the Icelandic playmaker.
Jordan Pickford – His stoppage-time error in this fixture last season cost Everton two points – there will be no room for errors again this time.
Everton looked to have come back into some form, but defeats to Norwich City and Leicester City leave them in deep trouble. They lost 2-0 to the Canaries at Goodison Park and then 2-1 at Leicester last time out – Richarlison put them in front, but the Foxes hit back in a dramatic finish. Richarlison was the last player to score a winning goal for Everton as he also netted against Southampton.
