The last time these two teams met in Europe was in the 2010 Europa League semi-finals, and Atletico won 1-0 at home on that occasion too. They lost the away leg 2-1 but advanced on away goals. Saul scored the only goal of the game in the first leg of this tie – Atletico’s second win in this fixture, compared to two draws and that one aforementioned defeat.
Jurgen Klopp has implored the Liverpool fans to make this another famous Champions League night at Anfield, with the Reds needing to overcome a 1-0 deficit to progress.
Liverpool’s recent form is unconvincing, however – the Atletico loss sparking a run of three defeats and two wins in five games, with the two victories both after going behind.

Liverpool have a tough task on their hands for this second leg, but they know their Anfield home is the perfect place to be to secure another Champions League victory.
Goalkeeper Alisson has been ruled out of this second leg, with Adrian set to feature in goal. Jordan Henderson remains a doubt with his hamstring injury – it remains to be seen if Liverpool will risk their captain. Andrew Robertson is fit after sitting out at the weekend as a precaution, however.
Mohamed Salah – The equaliser against Bournemouth at the weekend was his 20th goal of the season in all competitions.
Sadio Mane – His 18 goals for the season include Liverpool’s last three winning goals, against Norwich, West Ham and now Bournemouth.
Virgil van Dijk – With no away goals in Madrid, it is imperative Liverpool do not concede and the towering Dutch defender will be key to that.
Despite another faltering performance, Liverpool – who have lost three of their last five matches including the first-leg defeat in this tie – came from behind to beat AFC Bournemouth at the weekend. Mo Salah and Sadio Mane both scored in a 2-1 home win, as the Reds bounced back from losses away to Watford and Chelsea.
Joao Felix returned to the starting XI in the draw against Sevilla and scored in a 2-2 draw, before being withdrawn early to ensure his fitness to face Liverpool. Diego Costa and Kieran Trippier have also returned to full fitness since the first leg.
Joao Felix – Scored in the win against Villarreal and scored on his return to the starting line-up in the draw with Sevilla last time out too.
Alvaro Morata – Scored from the penalty spot at the weekend – his eighth goal of the season – and has a point to prove on his return to England.
Jan Oblak – Liverpool know they need to score at least once in this game, and the Atletico stopper – who last kept a clean sheet in the first leg of this tie – knows he is central to keeping them at bay.
Atletico Madrid are unbeaten since beating Liverpool in the first leg. They followed it up with a 3-1 win against Villarreal, with Angel Correa, Koke and Joao Felix scored Atletico’s three goals. Saul’s equaliser earned a 1-1 draw with Espanyol in the following game while, last Saturday, Alvaro Morata and Joao Felix were on target in a 2-2 draw with Sevilla.
