Leicester City will win this match.
West Ham United have only won one of their last ten Premier League matches against Leicester City, though the Foxes’ 2-1 win at the London Stadium in December was their first in this fixture since March 2017. After three draws and that one West Ham win in the previous four games, Kelechi Iheanacho gave the Foxes the lead last month and, after Pablo Fornals’ equaliser’ Demarai Gray’s strike early in the second-half ensured a 2-1 away win.
Here are the results of their last five competitive matches:
Dec 28, 2019: West Ham United 1-2 Leicester City
Apr 20, 2019: West Ham United 2-2 Leicester City
Oct 27, 2018: Leicester City 1-1 West Ham United
May 05, 2018: Leicester City 0-2 West Ham United
Nov 24, 2017: West Ham United 1-1 Leicester City
Leicester City’s back-to-back defeats have stalled their momentum lately, with the Foxes missing the chance to return to second place at the weekend.
Failure to hold onto leads has cost them in each of their last two matches and Jamie Vardy’s missed penalty also proved costly at the weekend.
Now, however, back on home soil they need to get back to winning ways.
Complacency may have crept in after such an excellent season so far, but the two defeats will have served as a wake-up call for the Foxes.
West Ham, on the other hand, bounced back from their last defeat to Leicester with two straight wins but they lost against Sheffield United and drew with Everton in their next two.
They have been inconsistent as ever, not helped by what has been a common feature of the season – a long injury list.
Felipe Anderson and Michail Antonio could be back in contention, and that is undoubtedly a bonus, but likewise their impact has been less than in previous seasons too.
West Ham, on their day, have the quality to cause the top teams problems but in recent seasons it has been all too rare that they have shown that.
Leicester City need to get back to winning ways, and this is a good opportunity to do just that.
Leicester City are odds-on favourites to win at home to West Ham, with Bet365, Ladbrokes, Betfair and 888sport all offering 8/15 on a home win.
The Foxes failed to hold leads in both of their last two matches, however, and Leicester to win and both teams to score is a best price of 21/10 with Bet365, Betway and 888sport.
Over 2.5 goals returns 4/6 with Bet365, Betfair and Betway, while both teams to score as a single bet is a best price of 31/40 with Betway.
Jamie Vardy is due to get back among the goals, and the current Premier League top goalscorer is priced at 4/6 with Ladbrokes to score at any time.
Leicester beat West Ham in December and have an excellent record in this fixture. At home, they need to be winning this to get back on track.
Brendan Rodgers believes Wilfred Ndidi is more likely to return for the FA Cup tie at the weekend than for this mid-week fixture, while Daniel Amartey and Matthew James are also sidelined. Youri Tielemans and Kelechi Iheanacho both came off the bench against Burnley and both could start this time out, while Ben Chilwell might also return at left-back.
Jamie Vardy – Missed a penalty at the weekend but the Premier League’s top goalscorer, with 17 for the campaign so far, will not expect to be out of the goals for long.
Dennis Praet – Scored against Southampton and set up the goal against Burnley last weekend too to prove there is more than just James Maddison when it comes to midfield creativity.
Jonny Evans – The Northern Irish centre-back has been an important part of the Foxes’ form this season and will be an important part of them getting back to winning ways too.
Leicester City’s previously excellent league form has faltered with back-to-back defeats, at home to Southampton and away to Burnley. The Foxes, after drawing 1-1 with Aston Villa in the first leg of their Carabao Cup tie, took an early lead against the Saints next up through Dennis Praet but fell to a 2-1 defeat. Then, despite Harvey Barnes giving them a half-time lead at Burnley last weekend, they again conceded twice to lose 2-1.
Lukasz Fabianski is close to a return but looks set to miss this match, while Jack Wilshere, Ryan Fredericks and Andriy Yarmolenko will also miss out. Michail Antonio and Felipe Anderson are to be assessed after both missed out at the weekend.
Mark Noble – The West Ham captain needs to control the midfield battle, alongside Declan Rice, if West Ham are going to cut off the supply line to Vardy.
Darren Randolph – While Lukasz Fabianski’s injury outlook looks a lot brighter, for now the Irishman is a much safer pair of hands compared to Roberto’s calamitous stint.
Nathan Redmond – Scored in the win against Chelsea on Boxing Day to establish his worth in attack Michail Antonio – Having the powerful attacker back from injury would be a welcome bonus for West Ham, as they look to get back to winning ways.
West Ham bounced back from their last defeat to Leicester City by beating Bournemouth 4-0 on New Year’s Day and then seeing off Gillingham in the FA Cup. Since then, however, they have suffered a 1-0 defeat at Sheffield United and, last weekend, drew 1-1 with Everton after Issa Diop’s goal was cancelled out just before half-time.
