France will win this match.
France have absolutely dominated Iceland in the past, winning ten of their 14 prior fixtures and drawing the other four.
Here's a look at the last four results:
Mar 25, 2019: France 4-0 Iceland (ECQ)
Nov 11, 2018: France 2-2 Iceland (Fri)
Jul 3, 2016: France 5-2 Iceland (Euro 2016)
May 27, 2012: France 3-2 Iceland (Fri)
Bet365 have the following odds available for this match:
Iceland are at 15/2, a draw is at 10/3, and France are at 2/5.
Group H will have two teams at the top of it ahead of this affair: Turkey and France, both on 15 points so far through six match days. Iceland are just three off the pace, and with this home match, they will have hopes that they can leapfrog France and possibly sneak into automatically qualifying for the Euros as a result of it. It will be a big, big task, though, seeing as how their record isn’t very good against them.
Iceland, as badly as it might hurt for them to read this, are not the same team they were a couple of years ago. After a World Cup that was not quite what it was, they have dropped back down a bit, with the Nations League proving such. However, they are still very strong at home and can get back in the hunt with a big win here. In the past year, they have four wins, four draws, and four losses, though those wins have come in the last six games, so they are on a decent run. At home in the same stretch, they have three wins, consecutively, a draw, and a loss.
France, meanwhile, have not been as assured as they would have liked, but they are still right up in the group and are very much favored to get to 2020, as they are expected to do so. They have had their bumps in the road and consistency is a bit of an issue, but there is no doubting the quality they have and how dangerous they can be. They have eight wins, a draw, and two losses in the last year, both away from home. In total, their record as visitors includes two wins and two draws this year, so they can be gotten if Iceland are brave.
Mbappe scoring anytime is at 1.91 via Betfair.
Ladbrokes have both sides scoring at 21/20.
It will be far from their easiest ever clash, but France have the squad available to them to go out and get a win here. Whether it’s by a lot or a little, you have to like their chances as they are a tournament winning side.
Erik Hamren has a pretty big injury blow here with center midfielder Aron Gunnarsson set to miss out due to one. Forward Bjorn Sigurdarson also will miss out, along with defender Holmar Eyjolfsson among others.
When Iceland took on Turkey at home, they got their biggest win so far of the group, and they will hope to draw on some of that to inspire them here. That victory was keyed by, of all people, Ragnar Sigurdsson, not Gylfi. His two goals, from center back, and his play defensively helped them take down a massive three points that kept them alive and well in the group. Speaking of Gylfi, they will be counting on him, too, to create something up front, even if they have little of the ball. He’s had a hard go of it at club level with Everton so far, but he’s got the ability to change games in a huge way.
Iceland have two losses and three wins in their last five matches:
4-2 loss at Albania
3-0 home win vs Moldova
2-1 home win vs Turkey
1-0 home win vs Albania
4-0 loss at France
Didier Deschamps will be missing #1 goalkeeper Hugo Lloris due to injury, while defenders Aymeric Laporte, Samuel Umtiti, and Leo Dubois also join him as watchers-on. Striker Anthony Martial is also on the list, though it doesn’t leave them short, exactly, on options due to their immense quality.
Even with so many big names out, it’s hard to feel bad for France. That’s because they have Kylian Mbappe running around causing issues. The PSG man has three goals and three assists already in qualification and you would not want to bet against him increasing those totals here. Antoine Griezmann is also going to be a menace to Iceland, especially if he keeps up his current international form. He has two goals and five assists in the group, showing how good he can be at setting up teammates for relatively easy goals.
France have four wins and a loss in their last five matches:
3-0 home win vs Andorra
4-1 home win vs Albania
0-4 win at Andorra
2-0 loss at Turkey
2-0 home win vs Bolivia (Fri)
