Hoffenheim’s disappointing league position in 2015/16 underdoes their home form: they went W6 D6 L5 – comfortably mid-table form. So, knowing that they are happy on their own patch, we have to take that into consideration here.
Leipzig, who finished second in Bundesliga 2, were far less prolific than the league winners Freiburg, and actually ended with a goal difference some 14 shy of their rivals. That shows how far Freiburg were ahead of everybody else in the division.
So Leipzig have work to do, and they have got the ball rolling by splashing out in excess of £25m on Naby Keita and Timo Werner – that investment could fire them into the upper reaches of the league table.
A difficult one to call then, but Leipzig’s upwardly mobile squad is arguably stronger than Hoffenheim’s, and their confidence is certainly higher.
This is another one of those matches where the draw appears to be the safest bet; either side could potentially win this encounter. The stalemate, at 9/4, could prove prudent.
Just one of Leipzig’s last six games of 2015/16 went over 2.5 goals, and that kind of sums them up nicely as a team: they can make games very tight and disciplined when they want to. Hoffenheim, not blessed with goals themselves, aren’t the kind of side blessed with natural net-busters. As such, the Under 2.5 Goal mark at Evens is a very appealing investment opportunity indeed.
The Leipzig +0.25 Asian handicap is worth a second look too; Hoffenheim appear vulnerable.
Hoffenheim just about slipped outside of the relegation places after a run of three wins in their last six, and they will know that they need to improve markedly if they are to avoid a similar fate once again in 2016/17.
