Getafe and Ajax will be meeting in European football for the first time.
Getafe have been one of the stand-out teams of the season in La Liga – currently sitting as ‘best of the rest’ behind the financial juggernauts of Barcelona and Real Madrid.
But it is the focus on the league that could hamper any hopes of a run in the Europa League, particularly after being handed such a tough tie.
Ajax, on the other hand, are without Quincy Promes and David Neres but have made light work of continuing their fine form so far.
Dusan Tadic has got back in the goals after a quiet season compared to last season’s phenomenal exploits and that could be a key turning point.
Ajax are flying high in the Eredivisie and another European run will further the reputation of this young team after their early Champions League exit.
If they go full strength, they could continue their current winning streak – which has also been built on a solid defence – and set themselves up nicely in this tie.
Getafe are favourites to win, given their home advantage and they are a best price of 31/20 with Bet365 to win. Ajax could be at full strength, however, and are an excellent price at 9/5 with 88sport, 10Bet, Paddy Power and Ladbrokes.
Ajax have won their last three matches to nil, however, and another win to nil will return 4/1 with Ladbrokes.
Jaime Mata is a best price of 6/4 with 888sport to score at any time for Getafe if the hosts do manage to end Ajax’s recent defensive streak, however.
For Ajax, Dusan Tadic is back in the goals – albeit from the penalty spot – and he can be backed at 11/4 with 888sport.
Ajax have won their last three matches to nil and could continue this run of form against an altered Getafe team.
Getafe should have a full squad to choose from but tended to rotate in the group stages and, with La Liga and a very real chance of Champions League qualification the team’s priority, they could chop and change again. Angel Rodriguez’s future is in doubt, with Barcelona looking to sign him as an injury replacement (thus allowed outside of the transfer window) and he may miss out as a result.
Jorge Molina – May start up front if Angel Rodriguez is bound for the exit door, and the striker most scored twice in the 3-0 win against Valencia.
Jaime Mata – Other than Rodriguez, the Spanish striker has been the most regular Europa League striker for Getafe, and he has scored ten times in all competitions.
Jason – The winger has set up four goals so fat this season as well as coring one of his own; the Europa League is his opportunity for regular first-team football.
Getafe’s four-match winning streak came to an end at Barcelona at the weekend, despite potentially Barca-bound Angel Rodriguez stepping off the bench to score in a 2-1 defeat. They had previously beaten Valencia 3-0, where Jorge Molina (twice) and Jaime Mate scored the hosts’ goals.
Quincy Promes, Joel Veltman, David Neres and Perr Schuurs are all out for Ajax, while Zakaria Labyad looks set to miss out too. Daley Blind is back, however, and could start at the back.

Ajax have won nine of their last ten matches in all competitions, keeping clean sheets in the last three as they saw off PSV and RKC Waalwijk in the league, either side of beating Vitesse Arnhem in the cup. Dusan Tadic has scored penalties in the last two matches – both 3-0 wins. Ryan Babel and Ryan Gravenberch also netted in the cup, while Lassina Traore and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored at home to Waalwijk last time out.
