Our Prediction Tip

Germany will win this match.

Germany have won seven of their 10 meetings with Slovakia, but they suffered a shock defeat in a warm-up game just a few days before the start of the tournament. Germany took an early lead, but Slovakia produced a stunning comeback to win 3-1, giving Kozak's team a massive confidence boost for this tie, although Germany will possibly be motivated by revenge here.

During qualifying for Euro 2008, Germany beat Slovakia home and away, with those two matches the only times the nations have ever met in competitive action.

Germany v Slovakia: Prediction

Germany are strong favourites to move into the next round - where Italy or Spain await - but Slovakia have shown enough in the tournament so far that they could cause a massive shock. They kept out England, picking up a 0-0 draw in their last group game, while Hamsik is the type of magical player who can produce a game-deciding piece of skill out of nowhere. Germany must be wary of both him and the lively winger Vladimir Weiss.

Germany v Slovakia: Betting Tips

Germany are just 4/9 to win this game, with the draw offered at 7/2 and Slovakia available at a massive price of 9/1, although there is little value in siding with Kozak's men for this one. Germany to win to nil is a very tempting 9/10, while Low's team can be backed at 5/4 to be leading at both half-time and full-time. From the correct scores market, Germany to win 2-0 looks good at 19/4.

Germany have an injury doubt over centre-back Jerome Boateng going into this game, with Shkodran Mustafi, who scored against Ukraine, ready to step in if his muscle problem rules Boateng out.

Joachim Low must also decide whether to stick with Mario Gomez - their goalscorer in the Northern Ireland match - or move Mario Gotze back into the middle as a false nine, a role he appeared to be very uncomfortable in during the first two matches of the tournament.

Germany likely XI:

Neuer, Howedes, Mustafi, Hummels, Hector, Khedira, Kroos, Muller, Ozil, Gotze, Gomez.

Jan Kozak's men squeezed into the knock-out rounds as one of the best third-placed teams at Euro 2016 and they will be big-price outsiders for a match against the world champions, who are yet to concede a single goal at the finals.

Marek Hamsik is the star man in midfield and while Slovakia lack a reliable goalscorer, the winger Vladimir Weiss, formerly of Manchester City, is another threat for Germany to be worried about.

Slovakia likely XI:

Kozacik, Pekarik, Skrtel, Durica, Hubocan, Mak, Kucka, Pecovsky, Hamsik, Weiss, Duris.

Germany usually get the job done in major tournaments - they have reached the last-four of every competition they have entered since the appointment of Low - and Slovakia are unlikely to knock them out and cause a gigantic Euro 2016 shock. Germany can make amends for the 3-1 friendly defeat they suffered to Slovakia with a comfortable win in this second-round game, with Thomas Muller able to finally break his bizarre European Championship hoodoo.
Germany have kept clean sheets in all three of their games at Euro 2016 so far.
