Germany will win this match.
Argentina lead the way over Germany so far, narrowly, with six wins, three draws, and five losses. They last played in 2014 in a friendly that ended 2-4 in Argentina’s favor. However, earlier that year, Germany won the big one, wining 1-0 in extra time in the World Cup Final.
Bet365 have the following odds available for this match:
Germany are at 17/20, a draw is at 14/5, and Argentina are at 14/5.
Germany might have put manager Joachim Low under pressure, and he continues to be linked with the sack, but they are still very much in control of their own destiny as far as Euro 2020 is concerned. They are on top of Group C, along with Northern Ireland on 12 points, and have scored a ton of goals as they look to qualify, as you would expect for them to do so.
Argentina, on the other hand, are in the middle of qualification cycles currently, so this match is all about building a team and experimenting a bit with the squad they have. They didn’t win the Copa America as they would have liked, but they have been talking about how the tournament pulled them together. We will see if that’s the case, or if it was just another false dawn for them.
In the past year of action, Germany have five wins, two draws, and three losses, all of which have made people think the team is collapsing, though it’s a far from terrible record, at least when compared to other sides in the world. At home, they have two wins, two draws, and a loss in five outings. As for Argentina, they have nine wins, two draws, and four losses this year. In away matches, they have two wins, a draw, and a loss, counting the Copa America defeat to Brazil in Brazil.
Waldschmidt scoring his debut goal anytime is at 3.4 via Betfair.
Ladbrokes have both teams scoring at 8/13.
The Germans just have so many choices to pick from that it’s hard to see them not having an answer for Argentina here, especially on home soil. They both have a long way to go, but Germany are a bit more complete at the moment.
Joachim Low has left out the likes of Nico Schulz and Antonio Rudiger at the back, Toni Kroos and Julian Draxler in midfield, and striker Mark Uth for this friendly, which should see him change the team a bit from the one that played and defeated Northern Ireland last time out. Leroy Sane also remains out due to an injury.
A ton of talk has been going on about Marc Andre ter Stegen and Manuel Neuer, so it’ll be interesting to see if ter Stegen gets the nod here and can do anything to convince the boss to give him the gloves full time when the team competes in competitive fixtures. Meanwhile, up front, we could see the debut of striker Luca Waldschmidt for the full national side. He’s played well for Freiburg in the Bundesliga so far, and they will be keen on bringing through yet another prolific striker as soon as possible to follow behind Werner.
Germany have four wins and a loss in their last five matches:
0-2 win at Northern Ireland (ECQ)
2-4 home loss vs Netherlands (ECQ)
8-0 home win vs Estonia (ECQ)
0-2 win at Belarus (ECQ)
2-3 win at Netherlands (ECQ)
Lionel Scaloni has left out a number of big names here, including goalkeeper Andres Romero, midfielder Angel Di Maria, and most importantly, striker Lionel Messi. Sergio Aguero and Mauro Icardi, never a regular for the Albiceleste, are also not in the team.
Argentina are still very much reliant upon Messi, but there is hope now that Lautaro Martinez can forge them a path forward toward a more sustainable future. The Inter Milan striker has already grabbed nine goals in 13 caps for his nation and has been strong at club level thus far, too. Also in midfield, Paulo Dybala has gotten a recall and will hope to put his stamp on affairs. He’s had a roller coaster couple of seasons, and he’ll certainly want to prove he’s still one of the best players in the world and not one to be overlooked.
Argentina have three wins, a draw, and a loss in their last five matches:
4-0 home win vs Mexico (Fri)
0-0 draw at Chile (Fri)
2-1 win vs Chile (Copa America)
2-0 loss at Brazil (COA)
0-2 win at Venezuela (COA)
