Everton’s last win in the Merseyside Derby was back in October 2010, since when they have tried and failed 21 times to beat Liverpool. Liverpool have won both previous encounters this season too – 5-2 in the league and 1-0 with a youthful team in the FA Cup. Curtis Jones scored the winner in the latter. In the league match, Divock Origi scored twice for Liverpool and Xherdan Shaqiri, Sadio Mane and Gini Wijnaldum also netted. Michael Keane and Richarlison were Everton’s goalscorers. Everton will never have a better chance to end their woeful run of form in this fixture than in this season’s FA Cup game, when Liverpool turned to their reserves.
That Curtis Jones’ winning goal saw Liverpool to another win was a huge blow for the Toffees, though at least they have now been spared the possibility of Liverpool winning the league at Goodison Park.
Still, the Reds only need two wins to seal the title and this should be one of them.
The break actually came at a good time for Liverpool, given their form had dipped. They were never going to miss out on the title but three defeats in four games ended their hopes of an unbeaten league campaign and a treble.
With only the league left to play for, and the possibility of a record points haul still within their grasp, they can build some real momentum over the coming weeks again.
Mo Salah’s fitness is unknown, but Liverpool have enough in reserve to cope if their star man misses out – they proved that in the FA Cup win at Goodison.
Everton have not had the worst of seasons, but went into lockdown after a heavy defeat to Chelsea, having also lost to Arsenal a couple of weeks earlier.
It shows the gap between themselves and the European battle, and this could be another frustrating game for the Toffees faithful.
With no crowd at Goodison Park they can not even claim a big advantage – not that it has helped them in the recent past in this fixture either.

Everton’s dreadful record does not bode well for this fixture, as Liverpool look to tick off the two wins they need to claim the title in the shortest time possible.
Yerry Mina (thigh) and Theo Walcott (abdomen) are definitely out for Everton, while Fabian Delph and Andre Gomes are also set to be assessed after picking up slight knocks. Of those four, only Gomes started the most recent game anyway.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin – A great season up front has seen the English striker score 13 goals in 27 league appearances, with calls for international recognition following him.
Richarlison – The Brazilian has scored ten times in 27 appearances this season – not quite as prolific as in the past but still a decent return.
Jordan Pickford – Seen his star wane this season and the England goalkeeper has a lot to prove. A big performance in this game would help a lot.
Everton signed off in the worst possible way – a crushing 4-0 defeat away to Chelsea that raised plenty of questions. They had previously drawn 1-1 in controversial circumstances against Manchester United – Dominic Calvert-Lewin opened the scoring but had a last-minute winner chalked off as Gylfi Sigurdsson was down on the floor, in an offside position, in the penalty area.
Mo Salah has been absent from training and missed a behind-closed-doors friendly but club officials have claimed it was just precautionary. The Egyptian could well feature at some point. Andrew Robertson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also face late fitness tests.
Sadio Mane – Scored when these teams last met in the Premier League and the Senegalese winger has notched Liverpool’s last three winning goals in the league too.
Mo Salah – Another fine season up front, scoring 16 times in 26 Premier League games, including in each of Liverpool’s last two wins.
Virgil van Dijk – Since marking his debut with a winning goal against Everton, the towering defender has been absolutely vital to Liverpool’s stunning form.
Liverpool’s form had actually dipped before lockdown, as they lost to Watford to end their hopes of an unbeaten league season, suffered a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea to exit the FA Cup and a 3-2 loss to Atletico Madrid which ended their Champions League campaign. They did win their most recent league fixture, however – Mo Salah and Sadio Mane scoring in a 2-1 comeback win against Bournemouth.
