Liverpool have beaten Chelsea twice already this season, though they needed penalties for the first of those after a 2-2 draw in the UEFA Super Cup. Sadio Mane scored both of Liverpool’s goals, in between strikes by Olivier Giroud and Jorginho, but Tammy Abraham’s missed penalty proved costly for the Blues in the shoot-out. In the league fixture at Stamford Bridge, meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino scored early goals before N’Golo Kante pulled one back in a 2-1 Liverpool win. Liverpool’s hopes of a record-breaking winning streak in the Premier League, an invincible season and new record English top-flight unbeaten run were all ended as they fluffed their lines against Watford at the weekend.
The Reds were beaten 3-0 – their second defeat in three matches in all competitions – and deservedly lost that game too as they fell well short of their usual standards.
The motivation then is there for this FA Cup game at Stamford Bridge – but Jurgen Klopp’s propensity to rotate his squad for domestic cup games could mean a weaker Liverpool team.
It gives Chelsea a sniff of success, but Frank Lampard’s Blues have hardly been in good form themselves this season.
Their draw with Bournemouth at the weekend, means victory in this competition against Hull is one of only two wins in their last eight matches.
Prior to the draw in Bournemouth, they had lost 3-0 at home to Bayern Munich in the Champions League and their defence has been porous lately.
Liverpool, even if it is the likes of Divock Origi rather than their fabled front three, should take advantage of that.
Dejan Lovren was scapegoated for Liverpool’s defeat to Watford at the weekend, and played poorly, but so did the whole team.
That should provide plenty of motivation for this game – not just for those involved in that defeat, who will want to hit back, but also for the fringe players who should be looking now at pushing for a first-team place.
If Chelsea were in better form, they would be a more certain bet – especially if Liverpool rotate their players – but the Blues are not, and Liverpool can sneak into the quarter-finals.
Chelsea are a best price of 5/4 to beat Liverpool with Ladbrokes, but their indifferent form makes them hard to back, and Liverpool could worth looking at 2/1 with Betway.
Both teams to score has been set at a best price of 4/6 with Bet365 and 888sport.

Divock Origi could lead the Liverpool line, and he is a best price of 14/5 with Ladbrokes, 888sport and Betway to score at any time.
Liverpool’s team selection could give Chelsea a chance, but Frank Lampard’s side lack form and are difficult to back as a result.
Jorginho’s two-match ban for ten yellow cards does not apply to the FA Cup, so he is free to face Liverpool, allowing N’Golo Kante more time to rest ahead of a possible return action next week. Callum Hudson-Odoi is also ruled out, as is Christian Pulisic, while Tammy Abraham picked up another injury and missed the draw at Bournemouth too – Olivier Giroud taking his place.
Olivier Giroud – Started ahead of Abraham at Bournemouth and showed great endeavor to play his part in setting up the first goal.
Willian – Dropped at the weekend, but the Brazilian playmaker could return and may feel he has a point to prove as a result.
Mason Mount – Faded after a great start to the season, but the young English playmaker still has plenty to offer in this team.
Chelsea have drawn their last two league games 2-2, first with Arsenal and then Leicester, either side of a 2-1 FA Cup win against Hull. Jorginho and Cesar Azpilicueta scored against ten-man Arsenal, but Chelsea were twice pegged back, while Antonio Rudiger opened the scoring and then equalised against Leicester.
Jurgen Klopp is yet to play a full-strength side in a domestic cup match this season and there could be more changes for this match, with Adrian back in goal and Joel Matip, Divock Origi, Takumi Minamino and youngsters like Neco Williams and Curtis Jones brought into the team.
Andrew Robertson – With James Milner injured, the Scot could be one of the more senior players in the Liverpool team and will be key at both ends of the pitch.
Divock Origi – The Belgian has not managed to break into Liverpool’s front three, and yet he has come up with plenty of big moments of his own in the past 18 months.
Takumi Minamino – Limited to domestic cup matches and sub appearances for the most part since his arrival, and this is another chance for him to force his way into Jurgen Klopp’s thinking.
After a season of almost unstoppable winning form, Liverpool have now lost two of their last three matches and scraped a win against struggling West Ham courtesy of some goalkeeping gaffes in between. They lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid, but Georginio Wijnaldum, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane scored in a 3-2 win against the Hammers. Liverpool’s Premier League winning streak ended short of a new outright record, however, when they were thrashed 3-0 by struggling Watford last weekend.
