Burnley come into this match on the back of a three match losing run. To be fair to them, they have lost back-to-back matches against Manchester City and Tottenham, so you can forgive them a bit. The issue is with how they lost them, shipping nine goals in the process. That being said, Dyche has turned them around frequently over the years and there will be no lack of confidence in his abilities. Ahead of the weekend’s round, they are in 13th on 18 points, putting them just three clear of the drop zone.
Newcastle have had a fine run of form in recent weeks, so much so that they have climbed up to 11th on 22 points. That has them seven clear of the relegation zone, which is tremendous considering they have doubled their points in six outings. Two wins in a row and seven points from their last nine has them flying high, but teams just haven’t sustained themselves this term in a parity-driven league. Because of that, they might just find it tough to not see that run end here.
At home this term, the Clarets have taken 12 points from a possible 24 so far via four wins and four losses. It’s been hit or miss for them, and they come into this fixture having lost three of the last four and two in a row. As for the Magpies, they have done decently well for themselves on the road. They have three wins and nine points from eight matches, to go with five losses. They have lost three of their last five, but crucially they have two wins in their last three on their travels to give them a lot of hope.
No for both sides scoring is at Betfair for 1.9.
Ladbrokes have Wood scoring anytime at 7/5.
Sean Dyche and Burnley are known for being shrewd operators that know how to make a bad run disappear. It’s not always pretty, but the Clarets should be favored to get at least a point, if not more here.
Sean Dyche has been forced to deal with a number of injuries in recent weeks, with Phil Bardsley, Ashley Barnes, Kevin Long, Charlie Taylor, Ashley Westwood, and Johann Gudmundsson set to miss out here.
It’s not been a great time of late for Chris Wood in front of goal. The Kiwi has had some chances but has spurned them every now and then but has wasted them in horrible fashion. They need their big man to be at his best, especially with Barnes out, and to add to the six he has so far. Out wide, a great deal of the creativity will come from Dwight McNeil. The winger has produced four assists and has proven to be one of the finest players outside of the top six or eight over the last two seasons.
Burnley have three losses and two wins in their last five matches:
5-0 loss at Tottenham
1-4 home loss vs Manchester City
0-2 home loss vs Crystal Palace
0-3 win at Watford
3-0 home win vs West Ham
Steve Bruce will be without Matt Ritchie, Jamaal Lascelles, and DeAndre Yedlin due to injuries.
It seems to happen every season, but right now is Jonjo Shelvey time. The English midfielder goes off the boil from time to time and makes a big error, but he’s also capable of coming up with great goals occasionally. He has four goals this season and has had the bulk of those lately. Wing back Jetro Willems is also showing his quality this term and why he may be due to take a step up soon. He’s got two goals, both tremendous ones, and two assists to show his versatility and attacking verve.
Newcastle have three wins, a draw, and a loss in their last five matches:
0-2 win at Sheffield United
2-2 home draw vs Manchester City
2-0 loss at Aston Villa
2-1 home win vs Bournemouth
2-3 win at West Ham
