Brighton & Hove will win this match.
Brighton’s win last month was their first against Bournemouth in the Premier League, though they did also beat the Cherries in the FA Cup last season. Bournemouth won 5-0 at the AMEX last season, stretching their unbeaten league run against the Seagulls to ten, but Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Aaron Mooy netted in a 2-0 Brighton win in December.
Here are the results of the last five competitive matches:
Dec 28, 2019: Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 AFC Bournemouth
Apr 13, 2019: Brighton & Hove Albion 0-5 AFC Bournemouth
Jan 05, 2019: AFC Bournemouth 1-3 Brighton & Hove Albion
Dec 22, 2018: AFC Bournemouth 2-0 Brighton & Hove Albion
Jan 01, 2018: Brighton & Hove Albion 2-2 AFC Bournemouth
Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth are in trouble, dropping down the table after an alarming run of form that, coupled with a long injury list, is showing no sign of stopping.
Defeat to Brighton when they last met – their first league defeat to the Seagulls in 11 matches – started their current run of four straight league losses without scoring.
Losing to Norwich at the weekend pushed them further into the mire too, particularly with Watford and Southampton having been in resurgent form over Christmas and into the New Year.
Brighton’s own form has not been brilliant – two 1-1 draws sandwiching 1-0 defeats since beating Bournemouth – but they come into this match in much better overall shape.
They have much fewer injuries to contend with too, and players in resurgent form such as Alireza Jahanbakhsh, who scored when these teams last met.
Graham Potter’s side have a chance to keep themselves clear of the drop zone and it is a chance they can ill afford to pass up against a Bournemouth team in such poor form.
With Bournemouth in such bad form, Brighton are favourites to grab an away win and can be backed at a best price of 6/4 to win with Betfair and Betway.
Bournemouth have not just been losing games, but they have been failing to score too. Betting against both teams to score will return 6/5 with Betfair and Paddy Power.
Brighton are hardly setting the world alight up front either, however, and under 2.5 goals is priced at 19/20 with Betfair.
Neil Maupay is Brighton’s top goalscorer this season and he is 6/4 with Ladbrokes to score at any time.
Bournemouth are out of form and look there for the taking at the minute, though recent form suggests this game will lack goals.
Jefferson Lerma could be fit after picking up a knock against Norwich to ease some of Bournemouth’s problems, but Junior Stanislas, David Brooks, Chris Mepham, Charlie Daniels Arnaut Groeneveld, Jack Stacey and Josh King are all unavailable, as is suspended Steve Cook. Simon Francis could replace Cook at the back.
Callum Wilson – His goals have been central to Bournemouth’s form in recent seasons and the England striker needs to start finding the net again to lift the Cherries out of danger.
Harry Wilson – The Liverpool loanee started the season in fine attacking form and is another who, if he starts firing again, can lift Bournemouth away from trouble.
Ryan Fraser – Formed such a good partnership with Wilson last season and the Scottish winger is vital when it comes to Bournemouth’s creativity.
Bournemouth’s winless streak went on with a 1-0 defeat to fellow strugglers Norwich at the weekend. While they beat Luton in the FA Cup third round, the Cherries have lost their last four league games now – all without scoring. That includes their 2-0 defeat last time they played Brighton and a 3-0 loss at home to relegation rivals Watford.
Aaron Mooy was fit to play at the weekend, replacing Alireza Jahanbakhsh in the starting line-up, but the Iranian could return to face Bournemouth. Shane Duffy also dropped to the bench and could be another to slot back in.
Neal Maupay – Set up Brighton’s goal at the weekend and now has two assists and seven goals for the season.
Alireza Jahanbakhsh – Finally ended his Brighton duck as he enjoyed some resurgent form over Christmas and the New Year and he will be keen to get back in the starting line-up.
Lewis Dunk – Brighton do not concede many but they also lack clean sheets. Bournemouth were the last team to fail to score against them, and the defender needs to ensure that is the case again.
After back-to-back 1-0 defeats to Sheffield Wednesday and Everton, Leandro Trossard’s goal at the weekend helped Brighton to a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa – the same result they managed the last time they scored, when Alireza Jahanbakhsh scored late on at home to Chelsea.
