Belgium vs Spain: Prediction

A new beginning for these two teams, and with new coaches looking to establish their own tactics and strategies this match may resemble something akin to a training game at times. Roberto Martinez will surely hand a start to Marouane Fellaini, who has impressed at Manchester United so far this season, with Eden Hazard expected to continue the fine form that has helped Chelsea to an unbeaten start to the campaign. With an obvious goal threat, Belgium will need to improve defensively if they are to ever achieve what this golden generation of players should on the international stage.

Death, taxes and Spain playing beautiful football….those are three guarantees in life. A new coach has come in but don’t expect Lopategui to rip up the classic formula and start again; he will go with the standard 4-3-3 Spanish template featuring patient build-up play and sublime passing.

This may only be a friendly but both managers will want to get off to a winning start in Brussels; however, it is almost impossible to separate these two. A stalemate appears most likely.

Belgium vs Spain Betting Tips

There may be a lack of competitiveness in this fixture but Belgium, having netted in each of their last 13 friendlies (and five of six competitive matches) will surely possess the forward motion to find the net. Spain too, with goals in five of their last seven friendly encounters, will fancy their chances of overloading Belgium’s rather fragile-looking full back pairing; Both Teams to Score (evens) and Over 2.5 Goals (11/8) both appear to be viable options.

The draw looks the most likely outcome of the match (21/10), while in the Anytime Goalscorer market it is worth waiting on team news before making a selection. But should Eden Hazard start, he is likely to cause havoc between Spain’s midfield and defensive lines, so get on board at 3/1 on the Chelsea ace to find the net.

Former Belgium head coach Marc Wilmots fell on his sword following a disappointing Euro 2016 campaign, and in his place comes former Wigan and Everton man Roberto Martinez. He inherits a fine squad that is yet to really deliver on the big stage.

Belgium likely XI:

  • Goalkeeper:- Thibaut Courtois

  • Defenders:- Thomas Meunier, Jordan Lukaku, Jen Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld

  • Midfielders:- Marouane Fellaini, Radja Nainggolan, Axel Witsel, Eden Hazard, Kevin de Bruyne

  • Forwards:- Romelu Lukaku

Spain too have a new coach, although in slightly different circumstances. After guiding his country to World Cup and European Championship glory, Vicente del Bosque has earned his retirement. He will be replaced by Julen Lopategui, who like Martinez has a hugely talented squad to work with.

Spain likely XI:

  • Goalkeeper:-De Gea

  • Defenders:-Carvajal, Lucas Vazquez, Gerard Pique

  • Midfielders:-Saul Niguez, Marco Asensio, Sergi Roberto

  • Forwards:-Diego Costa, Alcacer, Morata, Nolito

You can never truly predict how international friendlies are going to pan out, but the good news for punters is that all of European club football\'s main league campaigns are in action so we don\'t need to worry about ring rust here. Both of these teams suffered disappointing exits at Euro 2016, so they will each have something to ponder. The starting elevens of Martinez and Lopategui will go a long way to determining the outcome of this match, and in lieu of tat information the draw looks the most likely outcome. Both of these teams tend to go hell for leather in friendly matches however, so there could well be goals to savour.
The fact that both teams have new managers undertaking their first games in charge is a stat of relevance, but perhaps the key here is that in their last 20 combined friendlies, Belgium and Spain have scored in 18 of them. You could never accuse either side of taking their foot off the gas in non-competitive fixtures.
