Bayern got their preseason off to a start with a loss against Arsenal just a few days ago. However, that won’t be too big of a concern. The goal at the moment is all about getting ready for the season to come. And it’s a big one for the club and manager Niko Kovac. The Croatian has a lot of questions to answer after a routine year in which he won the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal, as expected. A lot more will be asked of him this go around.
Real Madrid, who approach their first preseason fixture here, are back under the care of Zinedine Zidane and have splashed some serious cash but still look like they have a lot of work to do before the season starts… both on and off the pitch. A number of players could be set to move on, with some big names sure to be transferred. Whether Zidane wins the battle being waged behind the scenes or not could well determine if he sticks around or is gone before too long.
The last time Bayern managed to beat Real Madrid it came in a friendly, so this is just as good a time as any for them to do so again, capitalizing on Los Blancos’ beginning preparations.
Niko Kovac has a 27-man squad at his disposal here on this tour. That team, however, will not have Lucas Hernandez, their newest signing from Atletico in it, as he continues to recover from a knee surgery. Alphonso Davies is back as well, so he could play a larger role here.
Robert Lewandowski, of course, got their goal in the 2-1 defeat against Arsenal, so the Pole is very much a man to watch in front of goal. Serge Gnaby is another. He provided an assist for the Polish international, and he’s going to want to nail down a place in the team as soon as possible. Corentin Tolisso is also in need of a strong preseason, as he recovers from an injury of his own and seeks to forge a place in the first XI.
Bayern have a loss, two draws, and two wins in their last five matches:
2-1 loss vs Arsenal (Fri)
1-1 draw vs Kaiserslautern (Fri)
0-3 win vs RB Leipzig (DFB Pokal)
5-1 home win vs Eintracht Frankfurt (Bund)
0-0 draw at RB Leipzig (Bund)
Zinedine Zidane has a side that includes new faces such as Rodrygo, Eden Hazard, and Luka Jovic in it, as well as supposed wantaways Gareth Bale and Keylor Navas, making this a convoluted mess of a preseason squad.
While most clubs would give you time to settle in, there is little time afforded at Real, and Eden Hazard, the former Chelsea man will look to hit the ground running with goals and assists. Keylor Navas, their veteran goalkeeper and multiple time UCL winner, will also look to put his best foot forward as he tries to either win the #1 jersey or secure a move. Vinicius Junior is another fascinating one to watch. He had really found his way before Zidane took over, so it’ll be interesting to see how he gets on now.
Real have three losses, a win, and a draw in their last five matches (all in La Liga):
0-2 home loss vs Real Betis
3-1 loss at Real Sociedad
3-2 home win vs Villarreal
1-0 loss at Rayo Vallecano
0-0 draw at Getafe
