Hungary have won five from five against Azerbaijan, including four without conceding. They have not met since a friendly in 2011, however – their only meeting this century – in which Hungary claimed a 2-0 away win.
Hungary have hit some good form of late, particularly at home – led by the goalscoring form of Adam Szalai.
Szalai has scored five times in the last five matches, including the equaliser against Croatia, to get Hungary out of their slump in form and back on track.
World Cup qualifying went dreadfully for the Hungarians but they can keep their Euro 2020 ambitions if they beat Azerbaijan once again.
They have won whenever they have faced Azerbaijan and with Szalai in form and the experienced Balazs Dzsudzsak in midfield they have the quality to do exactly that.
Azerbaijan, on the other hand, have been too inconsistent – their heavy 4-0 defeat to Kosovo proves as much.
If Hungary can get on the front foot early, there is no reason they can not add to their winning streak in this fixture.
Szalai’s goalscoring form in particularly is good reason for optimism, and the form book suggests he will definitely be among the goalscorers.
Hungary are big favourites to beat Azerbaijan but they can still be backed at 23/20 with Ladbrokes and Betway to win.
Betting against both teams to score will return 8/13 with Bet365, Ladbrokes and Betway, while a Hungary win to nil – as they have often done in this fixture – is 21/10 with Ladbrokes.
Hungary have scored twice in each of their last three wins, and under 2.5 goals is worth 19/40 with Bet365 and Betway.
They have Adam Szalai in superb form, however, and he is a best price of 11/5 with Bet365, Betfair, Paddy Power and 10Bet to score at any time.
Hungary have won every previous match they have played against Azerbaijan and they will not want to end that record now. They should claim an away win.
Eddi Israfilov has withdrawn from the squad through injury, with uncapped Akesey Isayev among those vying to replace him in the middle. Emin Mahmudov looks the more likely to start, however, alongside Richard Almeida.
Dimitrij Nazarov The highest scorer in the current squad, with two of his eight goals coming in the UEFA Nations League campaign.
Ramil Sheydayev – Looking to establish himself up front, having scored his second international goal in the defeat to Croatia.
Richard Almeida – Set up the goal in that defeat to Croatia and has also scored three of his own from midfield in 16 previous caps.
Azerbaijan suffered a bad 4-0 defeat in Kosovo to end their UEFA Nations League campaign on a low note, and then lost 2-1 to Croatia at the start of this qualifying – Ramil Sheydayev opened the scoring but Azerbaijan could not hold on. Last time out, they hosted Lithuania in a friendly, which ended in a goalless draw in Baku.
Defender Attila Fiola has dropped out from the preliminary squad, as has uncapped midfielder Daniel Gazdag and injured Donat Zsoter up front. Zsoter is replaced by another potential new cap, Kristopher Vida, but Adam Szalai and Krisztian Nemeth remain ahead in the striking pecking order.
Adam Szalai – Scored his 20th international goal to level the scores and set Hungary on their way to victory against Croatia last time out.
Balazs Dzsudzsak – Won his 100th cap last time out, marking it with an assist for Szalai’s goal. He has also scored 21 times himself for Hungary.
Adam Nagy – Hungary’s midfield pivot, the 23-year-old Bologna ace will set the tempo in the middle of the park.
Hungary have won three of their last four matches, but lost to Slovakia in their first Euro 2020 qualifier. They finished the UEFA Nations League with back-to-back 2-0 home wins – Adam Szalai and Willi Orban scoring against Estonia and Szalai and Adam Nagy doing so against Finland. After their 2-0 loss to Slovakia, Hungary then bounced back as Szalai and Mate Patkai scored in a 2-1 defeat of Croatia.
