Argentina have not lost to Mexico since the 2004 Copa America – a run of nine games (seven wins) since. They won each of their last two friendlies 2-0, both in November last year – the last two matches Mexico have lost. Mauro Icardi and Paulo Dybala scored in the most recent meeting, after Ramiro Funes Mori and an Issac Brizuela own goals helped them win the first. They were the first games between the two in more than three years.
The strength of the Mexico squad showed last time out, when they beat the USA 3-0 to maintain their winning form so far in 2019.
Though that includes needing penalties to beat Costa Rica and extra time to see off Haiti, they have also won friendlies against Chile and Paraguay in that time.
In fact, Argentina were the last team to beat Mexico – twice, in back-to-back games against them at home in November.
This is an less experienced Argentina team, however, up against a near full-strength Mexico team.
Andres Guardado is an obvious loss, but the quality of players Raul Jimenez and Guillermo Ochoa at either end of the pitch compensate for that.
Mexico’s form is excellent and though their Gold Cup win was not a huge surprise, the key in this game is that they have such a strong squad compared to Argentina.
Argentina’s last match – the goalless draw against Chile – was a damp squib and there may be little between these teams in this game either.
Mexico can still snatch a win, however.
Argentina are favourites to beat Mexico at a best price of 21/20 with 10Bet, but Mexico have a strong squad and at a best price of 14/5 with Bet365 they could be worth backing.
A Mexico-draw double chance still returns 8/11 with Bet365 and El Tri should certainly not be written off.

Mexico have nearly their full-strength squad available and Argentina do not. Mexico have won every game in 2019, and they could stretch that record in this game.
Defenders Nicolas Figal and Leonardo Balerdi could make their international debuts in this game. Lionel Messi is suspended but he is not the only big name missing – Sergio Aguero, Angel di Maria and Angel Correa are also among those missing.
Lautaro Martinez – Impressed at the Copa America with some strong performances up front and, with Messi and Aguero away, this is his chance to cement his international place.
Paulo Dybala – An excellent reputation has not translated into international goals but he is another with a chance to shine in Messi and Aguero’s absence.
Nicolas Otamendi – Could lead the defence as the most-capped player in the current squad and a key member of the Manchester City squad too.
Argentina beat Chile in the 3rd/4th-place play-off at the Copa America, with Sergio Aguero and Paulo Dybala netting in a match which saw Lionel Messi controversially sent off. The two nations met again in Los Angeles this week, but the match ended in a goalless draw.
Unlike Argentina, Mexico have a strong squad with them in the USA though captain Andres Guardado has withdrawn ahead of this game as his wife is due to give birth. Erick Gutierrez is injured, meanwhile, having scored in the win against USA last time out, while Cesar Montes and Luis Rodriguez have also dropped out. Rodolfo Pizarro is another to withdraw, having suffered appendicitis ahead of the USA game.
Raul Jimenez – Caught the eye for Wolves last season and has scored eight times in ten games in all competitions already this season.
Javier Hernandez – Now with Sevilla, the striker scored his 52nd international goal in Mexico’s win against the USA last time out.
Guillermo Ochoa – One of the regulars who could return for this friendly, as he looks to maintain his brick-wall reputation in goal.
Mexico have won every game they have played in 2019, although that does include a penalty shoot-out triumph against Costa Rica during their Gold Cup success. Their last two wins have both been against the USA. Jonathan Dos Santos scored the only goal in the Gold Cup final, while Javier Hernandez, Erick Gutierrez and Uriel Antuna scored in a 3-0 friendly win last time out.
