Dundalk will win this match.
Dundalk beat Shamrock Rovers 2-1 on the opening game of the season to stretch their unbeaten league run in this fixture to 11 games, but Shamrock Rovers hit back when they last met, in May, to win 2-1 themselves and end their terrible run in this fixture. Here are the results of their last five matches:
May 05, 2017: Shamrock Rovers 2-1 Dundalk
Feb 24, 2017: Dundalk 2-1 Shamrock Rovers
Oct 14, 2016: Shamrock Rovers 0-3 Dundalk
Sep 20, 2016: Dundalk 1-1 Shamrock Rovers
Apr 22, 2016: Shamrock Rovers 0-2 Dundalk
Dundalk impressed over two legs against Rosenborg in the Champions League, and will return to league action no doubt having taken confidence from those performances.
In the league they have been hugely impressive too, with only league leaders Cork City scoring against them in the last ten games, of which Dundalk have won eight.
Only Cork have a better defensive record than Dundalk, so it is easy to see why they sit comfortably in second place in the league table.
Cork’s phenomenal form means Dundalk are already well behind in their pursuit of a fourth consecutive League of Ireland Premier Division title, but they still remain formidable opposition and will be confident of a big win to nil against out-of-form Shamrock Rovers.
Dundalk are big favourites for Sunday’s game, with William Hill offering the best price of 11/20 on a home win.
Given their impressive defensive form, however, it is well worth improving those odds to 17/10 with William Hill by backing them to win to nil.
You can also get a best price of 21/20 by betting against both teams to score, again with William Hill.
In-form striker David McMillan is 3/1 to score first with William Hill, or 17/20 to score at any time.
Dundalk have impressed this season, and while they are well behind Cork City they have a lot to play for still as defending champions. A big win against Shamrock Rovers is on the cards.
Chris Shields will miss Sunday’s game through suspension, but Dundalk otherwise have a full-strength side to choose from. Key will be how they recover from their extra-time defeat to Rosenborg, but they have had an extra day compared to Shamrock Rovers, who lost in the Czech Republic on Thursday.
David McMillan has scored 17 goals up front for Dundalk this season, while veteran keeper Gary Rogers has been keeping them out at the other end during his incredible run of nine clean sheets in the last ten league games.
Dundalk’s extra-time defeat to Rosenborg on Wednesday, after a 1-1 draw at home, ended a run of five straight wins and five clean sheets in the league. Their most recent league game was back at the start of July, and saw them win 1-0 at Bohemians.
Goalkeeper:Rogers
Defenders:Gannon, Vemmelund, Massey, Gartland
Midfielders:Benson, O'Donnell Mountey

Team News
Ronan Finn is unavailable through suspension, while Shamrock Rovers may want to rotate their options after the long trip to the Czech Republic in midweek. Graham Burke is back from a three-game ban – his second of the season – up front.
Key Players
Gary Shaw has scored six times in 19 games up front, one more than both Brandon Miele and Graham Burke.
Team Form
Shamrock Rovers have suffered a couple of humbling friendly defeats recently, but they have been with weakened teams, playing just days after their Europa League exploits. In between, they beat Stjarnan over two legs in the Europa League, but lost both legs to Mlada Boleslav. Their most recent home game saw them lost at Sligo Rovers at the start of July.
Goalkeeper:Chencinski
Defenders:Madden, Webster, Clarke, Byrne
Midfielders:McAllister, Lopes, Miele, Clarke
Forwards:Shaw, Burke
